I knew someone would have the right answer on here.
-
That's the way I do it but Saddle Tramp says we're lugging and over-reving the engine. Ya think we'd know better. -
I'm trying to recall the last truck I blew up lugging and over-reving......hmm NONE!!
-
why is it that i'm always opening my mouth before putting brain in gear, or maybe it's because i'm "skipping a gear," oh well you're probably right. i should leave well enough alone.
-
There you go, now that's a good idea. Only kidding!!! -
you know i "skip" gears going up hill on this steep gravel road getting unto the hi-way. i never tried doing it down hill. or on the flats i don't drive on steepppppppp hills, just small ones.

Auto transmissions have synchronizes on most of the gears. Just stuff the clutch all the way to the floor and put the tranny in the next lower gear. You will hear a little whine as one gear catches up with the other and that is when the stick goes in.
Try that with an 18 wheeler transmission and get ready to come to a slow, agonizing and humiliating conclusion that what works in your Dodge Dually Diesel doesn't work on an 18 wheeler. Big trucks do not have those little synchronizing clutches in them and don't catch a gear and speed it up to match the other. You have to do it using the engine!
You have to match the rpm, gear and mph to the gear you select. Now most of us old timers can put it in neutral for awhile the find it again, but that takes time. It becomes second nature after a few hundred thousand miles.
Just don't get discouraged the first time you scrape a gear, we have all done it and someone says they haven't....they lie. -
