    When I attended Iowa Central school that's how I was taught.Iowa Law requires it I guess.I still practice it if I can't get it into gear.Otherwise because im lazy I will float.

    If its not required by law it sure should be, I know when I took my road test for GSF I did it with-out being told to. When we got back to the DC the safety guy giving me the road test set down in his office with me and went over his evaluation. The very 1st words out his mouth were "I was glad to see that you made the right decision and used the clutch for what it was designed for..instead of using it as a FOOTREST". I got the job and wound up retiring from there over 30 years later....to you newbies out there take this the way you want...LEARN how to double clutch...and be able to do it correctly. Some day it could very well be the difference between getting a very good job , or not getting one. I'm sure that there will be a few that disagree with me on this , but ALL CDL holders should HAVE to know how to double clutch....You should'nt be allowed to pass the required road test to get the CDL if you can't.....just my thoughts.....others mileage may vary.

    Tell your instructor to teach the correct way.Whatever you do after you graduate is your business but in school everything should be taught to the letter not short cuts.

    patty...../ why not use the clutch for what it's there for.....there is a reason for it being there...and doing what you want once you get the license is a recipe for trouble....

    That depends on the company.If I was with a company that required it then I deffinately would double clutch all the time.But my company don't care and haven't had any trk issues the almost 2 yrs with them

    Thank you for all the replies so far. My question was more along the lines of wanting to know if most COMPANIES require DC'ing versus shifting however a driver is comfortable with (DC or float).

    And it was a really good , well thought question too. But who is to say whether or not the person giving you the road test at that company you REALLY want to go to work for is gonna say.... "now before we take-off I want you to be sure and show me you know how to double clutch"...just like me there wasn't a single mention of it....On a side note...had a friend who tried for almost a year to get hired on with a local gas hauler...finally got his opportunuity ....I told him to brush-up on all the reg's before -hand...you know he failed the road test for not stopping at R_R crossing...just saying..in the case of double clutching its like this..the old way is always the best way.     I started driving back in 2003 and never drove for a company that required the double clutching my trainers never required it either.But here it is 10 yrs later so that may have changed.Deffinately ask that question in orientation.

    I double clutched all through school, the IL state tests and the first 4 days of training at which point my trainer told me, "stop using that clutch. You will wear out your knee." I then tested for my company test while floating.

    I haul swinging meat and we all know how heavy that is plus the slow trks with no power,the less I have to use the clutch the better off my poor leg will be at the end of the day.
