I can't say since I retired before the new 10's came out or we just didn't have them in the truck. But I can say what gear to start out in. This is from the old school. You select the gear that will get the truck rolling without any throttle. You should never have to rev the engine up to get it going unless you're stuck on a hill or very very heavy. You don't want to put all that torque on the drive line until it's moving.

What's the advantage of a Super 10 over a 10-speed where you go 1-5 (all with lever shifts), hit the range selector, and then, go back to the second position and shift 6-10?

OK, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Look at your shifter. Up/down paddle in front is a low/high range shifter. On a 10 speed shift 1-5,pull up for range shift, shift 6-10. If you have a colored button on the left side of the shifter that goes forward/back, you have a different animal. If you have both, you have a differt animal. If you have both witk a grey? button, you have a 13 speed. If you have both with blue? button, you have a 9 or 10 speed with a deep reduction. If you just have a red? button on the side w/o a range splitter you have a super 10. I don't know if I got my colors right. I have driven all these trans but never payed any attention to the colors. Why a super 10? You only have to move the stick 5 times, the rest of your shifts are all button shifts. To be more precise, the button is a splitter shift, the front lever is a range shift. BTW, Eaton came out with a horrible tranny they called a "super 10 , top 2", that shifted between 9-10 automatically. DANGEROUS, I and many others complained about it and I assumed they quit making them. Are they still making those dangerous monstrosities?

Yeah, I knew how to shift both, just didn't know if there was an actual driving/control reason for the difference other than the fact that you had both a range and a splitter switch on one, and just a range switch on the other.

I looked at Eaton's website a few weeks ago, and I do recall seeing the Super 10 - Top 2, so I assume they're still making them.

The splitter switch on the side is to give you more gears by 'splitting' the gears in half, or, to look at it another way, by adding 'half' gears. This allows smoother gear changing under heavy loads, because the ratios are closer together. It also allows for quick shifting when necessary, like on hills etc, without having to go through a whole gear change. (Ever missed a change and locked yourself out of gear going uphill? Come on, admit it guys, we all have! hehe)
I don't bother using the splitter if I'm bobtail, empty, or only carrying a light load. In that situation, I go up through my low range, then up through my high range, and only when I'm in top gear do I shift the splitter into high. It's always in low otherwise because in several of the trucks I drive, you have to have the splitter in low in order to have the truck in low range. If the splitter is in high, then you cant shift the range splitter into low.
However, when I'm loaded, I run up through low range, then as I shift into high range, I start each gear with the splitter in 'low', then split into 'high', then just before I shift up to the next gear I slide the splitter into 'low' for the next gear, so it's 'low' then 'high' again, all the way up through the gears.
