looks like a 5 speed main and a three speed brownie. i bet if you have not seen or worked one of thease you may think he is skipping a gear on the brownie. well he is but not the gear your thinking of, the shifting sequence on the brownie is towards you and back for low, away and back for direct [2nd] and away and up for overdrive [3rd]. the shoeless driver is skipping the overdrive untill he went to 5th gear on the main. this may look really hard but the trick was to keep one of the trannys in a gear and feel for the second tranny without the clutch. you can take both out and still find your way but if you lose to much speed , you wont be able to match them back up unless you stop and start over. i remember the brownies were notorius for locking up if the shifting tower got the slightest wore, then you would have to stop and dislodge the linkages, happy trails

So you drove the KW w/ a 6 and a 4 too. I hated that machine. Crawl out and get the bud bar to move that brownie linkage. Main box typical shift pattern, brownie last 2 gears reversed like a double over. PS-That's a 5x4 in the video.

I broke out in a paystar 5000 with a 350 cummins and a 5x4. Then moved into an a model with a 6x4 I hated that transmission setup with a passion usually jammed the brownie at least once a day. After that truck I moved into a really nice B model that had an 18x4 with an air shift 2 speed and 2 speed rears. That truck took a little while to figure out but it had w whole bunch of gears that were the same so I had to learn where to skip. When everything was in deep under it would pull the world and with everything in over and double over it would fly but when you had to start gathering up gears you were busy as hell.

sorry okiedokie i thought he started out in first and over but after taking another look i see he went straight back on the brownie after grabbing a couple mains and then he was skipping the od untill he got to high. i did drive a 64 kw with the 6x4 for a short time but that was so long ago i dont remember much [senior moment] except i think i never used the low on the brownie. i think it was 600rpm split on the main and 200rpm split on the brownie and remember just grabbing a whole main when slowing down or hitting a steep grade [no power] happy trails

Makes my body hurt just thinking about driving trucks like that. Hendrickson walking beam suspension,Armstrong steering and a 2 stroke Detroit w/ a set of sticks. Drove a couple of Tri-plex rigs but never did use all those gears. SRAY02.gif
