Jacobs Engineening of Windsor Connecticut states that the Engine brake should not be used to up shift, a common practice when the engine brake was installed on the Mack Maxidyne engine, (not the Dynatard) with the 5 or 6 speed Maxitorque transmission. Both Jacobs and Dynatard were used on Mack engines, because the 5 or 6 speed required a slow shift, waiting for the RPM to drop, some drivers would let the engine brake engage to bring the RPM down quickly. I would fire a driver who had to be told more than once.

As with anything mechanical jakes wear out.Thats why you can buy "tune-up" kits for them. The more you abuse them-the faster they wear out.Don`t forget microswitches on the clutch and accelerator(pre-electronic engines). If you misuse/abuse something long enough its a sure bet that WHEN you really need it -it won`t work.I agree it "sounds"cool but its not very smart. It does tell me who won`t be driving anything I own, though.

Care to elaborate on this?
Paying attention and not treating an 80,000 lb vehicle as a toy saves lives. -
I like loud jakes for about 2 minutes then get tired of hearing it.
I think they do more harm then good you let a real loud jake by someone you will scare them and they could jerk the wheel to hard or give granny a heart attack,
I think the guys that come thru jaking while upshifting are rookies and it does wear out ask you mechanic if it didnt wear out why did they need to rebuild mine on my old peter.
They also readjust them from time to time. They are ment for certian things and like some have said they are not a toy they are a machine to use.
To each there own but on a real long downgrade the loud jakes give me a headache I was one of those old staight pipe guys when I got my truck but that lasted about 2 trips. -
Most guys u hear upshifting with the jakes on just forgot the jakes were on. Ive seen alot of guys do it and ive done it a couple times its hard on the drivetrain (trans, driveshafts,u joints, carrier bearing, rearends). If u want to get that sound just get straight pipes but that gets old quickly.
Wiseguywireless Thanks this. -
Anytime I found I had left my jakes on when I went to upshift, I turned them off right away. While I will admit to having briefly 'played', it was never for long. My jakes were a tool just as my brakes and air horn were.

(re loud pipes)
Sadly, this has been demonstrated to be complete and utter ..um... well, wrong. (I say "sadly" because I like loud pipes, too) -

Dont get me wrong I like loud pipes but they get very old from the drivers seat. Although if you could get electric dumps like they sell for street rods/drag cars that would be cool. Run a muffled weedburner for everyday and straights up the sides to wake up the neighbors lol.
