Weren't truckers all mostly supportive of deregulation back in the good ol days? I read an old article years ago that lead me to believe that. I think it was landline. Probably that was a hotbutton issue just like 75k broker bond, or likely more so. Sure did have a more dramatic impact. Of course it could have been mythology like "truck driver shortages" and such.
Shippers don't need brokers?

Out of 500 companies that were before deregulation about 480 or more are long gone. Nobody wanted deregulation . Except the shippers, and the discount we were told would be passed to the consumer.. Yeah right. Then we made money.. Didn't have brokers sucking the life out of the rates, and above all we all had fun. Now it's backstabbing at its best..

In 1971 we were running for 50-75 cents a mile. Had nice trucks for 15,000 dollars, fuel was about 25 cents. Main driver go a dime, co driver was 5 cents. And here we are over 40 years later with inflation and everything.. The rates should be about 4 bucks a mile for general freight. And look what we get.

With all the "knowledge" that has been thrown around here I'd like to add more....... If a broker made too much money on a load it is because you allowed the broker to do just that....
How can you possibly lay your success or failure on anyone but yourself? -

well, I have actually picked up a delivered many loads at the last minute. Not that that's as important as making phone calls or anything, lol. amazing the image of themselves some of these brokers have. I guess when you talk smack all day you actually start believing it.
Go ahead buddy, put on your superhero cape and go home and have a drink. You saved the day and got a truck there, I'll just be loading up and actually doing the trucking, nothing important. Will try to check call you in the morning, but you prolly won't answer til 8. cheers mate !Last edited by a moderator: Nov 12, 2013
G3Truks Thanks this. -
Well G3--Ive been around awhile myself--and while it does seem to me YOU are doing things properly--I am sure even you cannot argue that you are the exception to the rule today--Most of what the more experienced drivers posting here have said rings very close to the truth--especially those who operated b4 dereg(which an entirely diff can of worms)
I am also sure if you are still running your biz this way--that you have some stories of your own about unscrupulos brokers tryin to undercut you,,,,,,,
Its a game--to many--while it is a business and means of support to others.....and the ones w/deep pockets are ALWAYS going to try to find away to make their pockets deeper at anyones expensive--which is why----we all have to be better and better business people in today's day and age--I for one am not bitter at all----
BUT--do I long for the days when I could slide into the Point--and be met with a handshake--and an envelope for my troubles--and a list of their picks for next week--with a handshake about what the rate would be--and a quick phone call to a meat buyer back home in Fla--about what/where to pick up for him over in Pa and happily run back to the house and do it all over again?
Just Sayin................G3Truks Thanks this. -
So, shippers don't need any license or certificate to do the brokerage? Than why the hell on earth we are dealing with brokers?
