There are two issues I want some feedback on:
First, is it too unethical to request an inspection in order to collect a bonus?
Second, In what cases, if any, is it legal for an employer to "fine" a company driver for such things as: going out of route; getting a ticket; damage to equipment (even when not at fault); DOT inspection violation, etc. I don't recall signing anything giving my employer permission to do this, but even if I did ...?
To the first issue, many companies offer bonuses for clean inspections. When at my company it went up to $200, I was tempted to get one on purpose but decided against it. Recently, the clean inspection bonus went up to $450! Now, I'm really tempted. The "fine" for anything being wrong on an inspection is now $150. I had a conversation with someone in the Safety Dept., the safety guy said, "I have some drivers who get inspected a lot, like once a month at least". At the time, the bonus was $300 and I thought, "are you just stupid? Isn't it obvious such drivers are taking advantage?"
In over 6 years of driving, I have never been inspected except one time I accidentally drove by an open scale and got pulled over and escorted back for an inspection. Luckily, I did not get a ticket or any violations. So, I assumed it would be suspicious if I started getting inspected several times per year but Safety Dept either isn't paying attention or doesn't care, considering the previous comment.
Although I am tempted, now that the inspection bonus is so high, I think it is unethical to do this. Of course, it can be easy to rationalize. For instance, I work for a salary and despite a couple raises, I now actually earn less per mile or hour than I did when I started at this company. This seems like a good point for debate or conversation. Thanks to anyone who wants to contribute or help us clarify the issue of company "fines".
SHOULD I ASK FOR A DOT INSPECTION?

Hell for that kind of $$$ us be asking for an inspection once a week!!!... But I agree with you that it would be taking advantage of the system and eventually would probably put and end to such bonuses... My company gives $50 for a clean inspection of any level.
D.Tibbitt and dogtrucker Thank this. -
Yea no one ever takes advantage of a system that offers them free $$.

Asking for an inspection? Are you crazy? You may mess around and do that in the wrong state

If you ask them they will find stuff missing that you didn't even know you needed.

God help me and my big mouth. It better be decent. DOT would be working to PAY ME via clean inspection. Several times a week if need be.
Sorry boss, DOT is really cranking inspections. Pay me. Here are the clean inspection reports.
Three clean inspections = around 1350 or so. That's worth the risk. Fines? Ha. Pay it too.
Sort of like the old Maryland I-270 speeding ticket at 45 dollars for 70 and over against a load that paid 68 in 2.4 hours total with a potential for 300-400 daily.bzinger and Cattleman84 Thank this. -
Hell I would go in for inspection.. I know my equipment would pass.... But from experience DOT may not want to give you one, they're thinking is if you're asking you must be good.
