1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Should I even bother trying?

    Howdy all,
I'm Carl, I've been here on the forum for a bit, but normally read instead of post.
Here's my situation. I have 4 and a half years experience driving cross country truck. I also have hits against me and would like to get an idea of how likely it will be for me to be hired again. Also any information about job leads would be appreciated.

    DAC:
Co #1: abandonment- My "training" company. I was frequently shorted on my pay and had enough, when I quit I was told I would have to bring the truck back to their terminal, and lived half way across the country from their terminal with no way to get back home. I did abandon the truck and take responsiblity for it, I simply did not see any other way to handle it.

Co #2: Violation of company policy- I drove with this company for a bit over four years. While waiting for three days in Ohio during the winter I got a qualcom message saying I needed to drop my idle hours. I did not have idle control on the truck, or an APU. It was an idle the truck or freeze situation and I idled the truck. I had asked them before to swap me to a truck with an APU but they wouldn't. Anyway, I was routed back to the terminal and was discharged.

Co. #3: Lates- This one one confuses me a lot to be honest. I was late with only one stop on a five stop run. It was a stop that was listed as being deleted on the paperwork, and I had verified the deletion of the stop with the shipper. I made delivery on the first three stops, with the deleted stop being stop number 4. I was running a rental truck with no qualcom and was emailed a message on my laptop to stop at the fourth stop and make sure the deleted stop wasn't on the truck after all, since they were telling the load coordinator it was on the truck. I stopped there when I was told to be there and no one was there, I even returned again in the morning and again no one was there. I then headed to stop 5, the last stop, and made delivery on time. Stop 4 was buried in the nose of the trailer, with no paperwork for it, and I was told to take it back to stop 4. I did, and was then routed to the terminal, and was told I was being fired for lack of communication. again it was a rental truck with no qualcom, and I was using my own cell and laptop to get and take care of load information, etc.
I don't know what happened here, as I said it still confuses me. if it was lack of communication, why didn't they have a qualcom on the truck? Why list it as lates instead?

Co. #4: My latest company- Violation of company policy. I had brought my truck into the terminal for a PM and they found a bent paperclip on the dashboard. (My wife was riding with me and I think she had used it to tie her hair back at one point) Based on that bent paperclip, and a low idle time, I was fired. They stated that since my idle time was low, and there was a bent paperclip I must be tampering with the computer on the truck.

I also have one failure to stop for a stop sign ticket from jan of 09, an over weight ticket for july of 08, and a failure to wear a seatbelt ticket from nov of 08.

Should I even try to apply for driving positions at all with the current tends in trucking?

Thank you in advance for your replys.
    Carl

If you don't even bother trying, you definitely won't be able to get a job. You are your own best cheerleader, so if you don't think anybody will hire you, they won't.

If I read your story right, you have 4 1/2 years of driving, with 4 different companies, but one of those companies you were with for 4 years?

yes I was with one company for the majority of the time I have been driving. I admit I am not supertrucker, and I am not giving up, I'm more then a bit bull headed. I'm simply trying to get a feel for how much I am going to have to work at this.
I have had a few nibbles already, I just seem to loose them once my dac is seen.

    Short answer in 2 parts,
    1. For a big company, your screwed.
    2. For an o/o that doesn't check your DAC you could get around it but you tickets aren't to bad if thats all you got in the past 5 years.

I have a felony 15 years ago, a misdemeanor 18 years ago and 4 tickets in 5 years and a clean DAC. I filled out apps with everyone even stevens and swift turned me down, but the good news is, it looks like I will be a wildcat out of choo choo making 22 1/2% running to PA and TX:biggrin_255:

I had already noticed the no go on big companies when JB and Swift said no. I was told it was for being fired from my last company, and I could apply again to them if I got 6 months with another company first.

the owner op system is one I have been looking into, and finally realised would be best done on this site. What better area to see what O/O's were hiring then here after all?

thank you both leannamarie and biggeno, I appreciate the information, and support.

No company will touch you with an abandonment on your record. If they do then the company is having a hard time finding drivers ( because good drivers wont aply with them) and is not worth a #### driving for anyway and you will most likly find your self pissed off and leaving them as well.

I think you would be better off trying to find some kind of local work, stay there for a few years to build up your work record and then try the OTR once more. You will have a better chance getting a job with someone that knows they will not have to worry about you leaving your truck 2000 miles away if you get pissed and walk away.

With things the way they are these days companies are very very picky about who they hire.It not's like it was a few years ago when they would put anyone behind the wheel no matter what there record looked like. Now with so many good drivers out of work the so so drivers are S.O.L!

Not trying to be an ### but the way it is, is the way it is.
