Well, I saw a show (20/20, Dateline) that had people with type 2 diabetes that had the bypass operation and they immediately were diabetes free. It was pretty amazing. I would ask the doctor if that's why.

I suggest you get a medical second opinion from a doctor, not an internet trucking forum.

Because I am not a medical expert I will restrain my comments some. I am not sure about that immediate bit, but I know of maybe 50 people both male and female that are type 2 diabetics that take no pills or insulin shots. Their diabetes is not out of control because they lost weight. It is my understanding diabetes is much like alcoholism. Once a diabetic always one. It is all about control. Losing weight helps bring diabetes under control. I did not see that report but I want to remember seeing it previewed. The bypass surgery helps you to lose weight that is the real benefit, in my opinion of course.

FIRE your Doctor Today!!!!!! He is a moron, go on youtube and type in Ketogenic diet, Things like T2 diabetes are curable it about 30days. Look up Dr.Bergman too, he as a lot of videos that can help. You may want to look up Functional Medicine Doctors in your area too. I'm on this diet and have lost 60lbs in 5mths, gone off three meds. Do your own research and get informed. Good Luck

I'm 6ft2in and weighed 285lbs when I was diagnosed with type 2 with an a1c of 9.8, that was 2 and a half years ago. I'm now at 225, the only thing I changed was removing most sugary drinks like soda from my diet. My a1c is now around 7.2 with help from metformin and diet. Yeah I'm hungry more often because i don't eat as much or as often as I used to, buy I'd suggest going the old fashion route vs a drastic surgery like gastric bypass or a lap band

There has been some fantastic information and advice posted here. However be advised. I discovered this the hard way. The different pills for control of type 2 some act on the liver and some the pancreas. I am not one of the lucky ones to get my diabetes under control upon losing weight. My body rejects glimepiride and Metformin causes me other issues. Even though I AM type 2 I am forced to use Lantus for baseline control and Aspart before each meal. Please I'm begging you all, if your overweight lose that weight.

Edited: I get both my Lantus ( around $100 to $140 a vial ) from the VA. The BD needles are around $30 for a box at Walmart. The Aspart I also get from the VA is anywhere from $450 to $500 for a box of 5 pens. The box of 100 pen needles is around another $30 bucks. Then there is the alcohol swabs and the 3 times a day testing. Test strips are not cheap. Oh also there is the every 90 days A1C testing. Like I said Please Please Please lose that weight!

    Excellent post, Mr Lurk.

Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Millions attempt both and millions fail. Why?

When I would see people in the walk into the gym, I would ask them what they were working on that day. They would look around the gym to see what equipment is available. They're going to fail. How do I know? You have to have your mind made up BEFORE you get to the gym. It's like the preplan and pre trip. The better the planning, the better the results. I am rolling out at this time. I will eat this for breakfast. I shall load at this time, I will eat a can of tuna and a couple apples at 12:30. I will shut down at 1730 at the X and have grilled chicken for dinner. It's part of your daily routine.

Need help? Start a group. Biggest Losers on TTR. Post your weight and keep posting your weight loss. 325 isn't horrific on 6'5 as it would be on 5'5. Do some brisk walking and build those lungs up a bit.

Gastric Bypass: No; plus you can't take pain medications as a result...
    Sleeve: No
Lap band: possibly but even though it's reversible, know that it doesn't prevent a person from eating an entire large pizza by themselves; NJ Governor Chris Christie had a lap band operation, doesn't look like it helped him at all. I would still say NO.
    • It's possible to have other issues with any kind of surgery that cannot be explained by your doctor & the only explanation the doc will give you: I explained to you that there "might" be side effects of surgery... Thanks Doc for nothing!
    • For instance, a friend of mine had a lap band & after 2 years, she found that she couldn't drink liquids and also had difficulty swallowing solid foods. Some kind of air bubble in her throat but her MD couldn't find anything wrong with her.
    • No indication of what the heck it was, nobody on youtube with her issues, nobody! Finally, she just had the band removed & is doing fine now. She did gain back the weight she had lost before the band but now she's exercising 4x a week, has run a 5K & is working on her weight goals in addition to trying to curb sweets, white flour based carbs, alcohol & all the bad stuff out to eat healthier.

Lots of good info on eating healthy & getting outside for exercise posted in your thread!

It will not be easy losing weight but at 26, it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to lose it when you are 30, 40, or older!

The doctor is recommending Gastric Bypass, why? 325 lbs, 6' 5" is not bad. What he should have recommended was to eat better & exercise.

If you DO plan to go through with surgery of some kind, make sure they require you to see a psychologist & a nutritionist FIRST to know what you are getting into before committing to surgery. I still say NO but you might not trust the advice of some guy on the internet.

BTW, there is a Truck driver fitness program by this guy: Siphiwe Baleka. I think he works for Prime.
