Should I idle up while parked for better oil pressure?

See guys pulling big hills in the Rockies and pulling off at the top, shutting down as soon as they get the brakes popped.

    Poor engines

This idle truck thing has a lot of variables to it.

What kind of engine are you talking about? Pretty emission?

Part of the idle up is to stop engine slobber as others have stated and you need the engine warm to do that.

Other part is oil pressure and whoever said it's not.... is dead wrong. You don't idle up a dohc isx and watch that cam get eaten up real good! Volvo engines on the other hand are real good at keeping great oil pressure at all rpm and they use egr and the turbo (or epg in the old d12) to keep the Temps up... that's why you don't need to rev up volvos.

A lot changes if you are talking pre emission or not. Some say on emission engines that you should review them up pretty high to keep the exhaust real hot and keep soot from building up but others say you use much more fuel that way and create more soot while idling.

OK, good stuff. The trucks I run at my job are pre emission I think. 06 Pete and 02 freightliner, but my personal truck 06 Volvo vnl withe the egr emmisions as you stated is different. I didn't know that idling it up wasn't necessary so thinks for that.

I say go for it.The extra 3or 4 hundred rpms wont make much fuel difference(especially if you,re not Paying for the fuel). These new trucks suck with all there DPF ,emissions corking every thing off for the Republic of California.Hard to get "a clean burn at 600 rpms with "the corked off exhaust".Youre very fortunate to have a boss "with brains".Some lowlife companies like May trucking took your idle fuel usage out of your paycheck! The d12 has a epg (exhaust pressure govenor) right after the turbo on the exhaust. What this thing does is close a bit to create back pressure, it does that for 3 reasons.

    1. To force the exhaust gases through the egr cooler better.

    2. As part of the iveb volvo exhaust brake (that's your highest stage)

    3. To force gases back into the motor to help warm the engine up.

It closes in 3 different levels of closure. When the engine is below 160f (I believe) it max closes to mimic putting a load on your engine thus warming it up quicker. Because of this function, volvo says you can idle the engine as low as 650 rpm.

Also because volvo d12 is very good at maintaining 60psi oil pressure for the most part so you don't need to worry about oil not getting to your top end.

The egr in the d12 is the cleanest I have seen. When I finally rebuilt mine, I sent the head to be remanned and the head shop said he couldn't believe how clean that head was for a egr engine.

I idle 800 min to 900 if having to keep engine running for any length of time. Some r.p.ms engine runs smoother than other rpm.

Thanks, your response is giving me some peace of mind concerning this truck. I hear this and that from him and her talking about I hate and I love Volvo, hard to tell what's going on. I think one of the guys on here had a truthful response when he said every truck has there issues...
