it's not a "big radio",but here is what I'm using...it's all radio shack and works great...and the radio was given to me for free a few years ago.
Radio Shack TR443 CB with a Radio Shack 5 foot steel whip and a SWR 2T meter. The antenna is mounted on the passenger side,I've gone through 2 coax cables with it on the driver side (yes I left slack for the door opening). It works fine for me I get under 1:5 for a SWR reading and I average 10-15 miles for range.

I can't remember if I posted my most current radios but here they are...
The first 3 are a Cobra 21 GTL from 1979. Yes it is 32 years old and still works great. Stock radio, stock mic, never been peaked or tuned, does ok for what it is. I only paid $10 for it. I run it with a Wilson 1000 mag mount. I want to upgrade the antenna to a 108 whip but don't have a suitable mounting place at this point. It's mounted between the sun visors of my 4X4 truck so I don't need an external speaker.
The last two are a Uniden Washington base station, a Philippines built model. It too is stock, not peaked or tuned (so I am told) and does good on SSB and AM. Not a power moster by any means. The only mod I've done is the Skythumper ST65DX mic, only because I've been told I sound better over the air than with the stock mic. I run a Shakespeare Super Big Stick and 50 ft. of Browing BR400 hard line with the base station.Attached Files:
