Open up your task manager and get familiar with what is listed. Anything on there can be pasted into google, ie jusched.exe, and it will come up with many results telling you what it is and what it does. Do this often enough and you'll be able to glance at the list and notice if there's something there that shouldn't be.

If you find something that shouldn't be there, pasting the full name of it into google will come up with ways to remove it. Run some of the programs you use through google too. Some of the stuff is spyware disguised as normal programs.

well ok, first here is some info, the task manager is located by right clicking on the task bar at the bottom and select task manager.
another place to see what programs start at start up is look at start, programs, start up, and see what is listed there.
now here is some helpful info, if you are running XP here is a site that is very good info on XP, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm
or if you are using VISTA, then here are some helpful sites for vista, http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/default.mspx
and there area many other sites, all you need to do is google.
now as for anti virus programs and firewalls. for free versions
and other free programs look at this link,
    http://forums.g4tv.com/showthread.php?t=113232
now also running MBAM is and spybot search and destroy are great programs for keeping your system free from trojans and spyware and adware. trojans are nasty and most antivirus programs will not stop them.

The bad stuff doesn't use the start up folder to launch itself anyway. Most regular programs don't anymore either.

Sure can, System Restore is a point you can set to a good known point of when your system was running optimal for you.

I could sit here and type everything per help and support about "System Restore" but you already have the information on your system. The easiest and best solution to your answer is.

Click on Start, scroll down to Help and Support.

Click that and it should open a screen with "Windows Help and Support".

    Type in " system restore"

Get ready to do some reading

You should get back, give or take about 30-40 results of links. Help and Support requires no internet connections.

The first few results will probably be your best results. Like, "frequently asked questions" will be one of the results. Another should be, Turn System Restore on or off, will be another. These are examples of your results from the help and support input.

Reading this provided material you have already paid for(it's already installed with the operating system), will give you the answers about System Restore. It will give you instructional details on setting this up and deleting if you so chose. It will guide you to set up a known good restore point of your operating system. Help and Support also provides information, to just about everything about your operating system except the written code.

I will express one bad point to it, Let's say you setup a known restore point last week(pick any day you want). You did a operating system update or any changes in the way you want the operating system to work since the restore point. You will lose those system settings if you decide to go back to that "known good restore point". Now if you create a document since you created that "known good point", I have seen it not delete those documents but I do not guarantee it. This is not really a bad point of system restore because it is intended to take you to a know good point of your operating system. Whether you save your data on a backup is upon you.

Which brings me to the next subject, backing up data, pictures or anything you feel is of value. It does not necessary have to be of value but who wants to lose pictures or documents you spent time creating. Depending on the amount of data or pictures you are saving. The only thing that I have found that works best for me is saving it on a disc(CD) by dates and filename. No moving parts on a CD or DVD disc. You do not have to worry about the CD failing unless you let the kids play with it in the yard as a frisbee.(LoL) DVD's save the most data or you could buy a thumb drive. I still suggest saving on disc(just my opinion here).

I could get into explaining about the task manager but that's another whole subject in it's self for another time and alot of material to cover. Not saying you should not get to know how your system work but first, let's get it locked down. I'm glad to hear that you secured the wireless router with WPA settings.

It's late and I'm off to bed. Post more questions at will.

Speaking of not losing data, do not use the My Pictures, My Videos, etc. folders for saving anything you want to keep. Make your own folders and use them. Those folders are counted as part of the windows OS and can be overwritten when you have to reinstall the system. Even with a full reinstall from scratch, as long as you do not format the drive, your separate folders that you made will be left alone with your data in them. Barring damage to the drive itself, of course. Using one drive for the OS and other drives to store data is even better.

If you truly want to protect your PC, then I would recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 or Kaspersky Internet security 2010. Norton is a joke, its more of a virus itself. 2nd, use Windows Updates to make sure you have the latest fixes, usually this is set to the default setting of automatic and will download and install these updates. 3rd.........stay off the porn sites, LOL!!
