Side Skirts price breaks

I wasn't knocking you. I have no problem with enterprising people.

 

It would have to be a 'paid monthly' thing. Upfront, you're just asking for a few cans of spraypaint to undo your investment. Such, a '$200/mo' or so type setup would work. Every time the driver/owner wants to collect his check, he'd have to show up at your premises, and you'd cut a check, pro-rated for the exact time since the last 'check up' on the ad. As long as the ad is still there in good order, you pay.

So, 97 days between 'check ups', would be 3 7/30th months worth of pay, etc.

But, a one-time thing just won't work.

btw, I was looking into running my own trailer and using it as a rolling billboard.

 

I don't think this idea will go anywhere as it has been knocked around in the past. The problem is that when a truck does something that is perceived negative it will be the advertiser that will get the call, it becomes negative advertising.

 

You need to add an option.
"You want me to pay you to put advertising on my truck? Have you lost your flipping mind?"

I understand your idea here but people know your making money on this venture and I don't think many will be willing to pay you to advertise on the truck. I don't think that side skirts have gained enough of a following that people want them bad enough to get a discounted one installed just so they can be a moving billboard.

 

Most owner/operators and truck drivers choose the job they do because of the independence. You won't find a bigger group of bull-headed, I'm going to do it my way group of people anywhere. Needless to say this kind of thinking does not embrace new ideas.

Just look how many still drive nice hoods at a cost of ten cents a mile more for fuel. We like to look good, even if it comes at a price. Now if a hood costs 20% more in fuel, why would we put fugly skirts on or trailers to save 2 - 5%.

Ten cents per mile can add up to $12,000 per year in additional fuel costs. Us old hands started driving when a truck with class was priceless. Aerodynamic truck models are catching on but it takes a poor economy and high fuel prices to convert many. And still some will never buy into it.

Add the fact that we know through experience anything close to the ground, especially in the middle of a 53' trailer, will eventually be torn off and you can see why these are not catching on. So you have additional costs for installation, repair and down time when they are torn half off. All this headache and cost for a possible fuel savings of $2,000 - $3,000 a year.

You have no idea how many things have flooded this industry with hype of fuel savings. You have no idea how many thousands have been uselessly spent on these and the end result is almost always the same. That is either no savings or not enough to be worth the cost and headache.

 

I pulled a trailer last week that had skirts. One problem I have with them is that (at least the one I pulled) I was unable to see the trailer tires. If you have a flat on a trailer, it would not be able to be seen as you go down the road. You will never know untill you stop somewhere, something I don't like to do often. Just my 2 cents...

Maybe all owner/operators aren't that way and I sure don't want to offend anyone. I am certainly that way and have met many who are too.

Obviously this is just my opinion, but I believe that independent people are inherently strong-willed and accustomed to doing things their way. They seldom take the path of least resistance and do most of their learning through the school of hard knocks.
