I'll be signing on with a small carrier in March that is not in my home state and was given the option to get plates through them. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing this vs getting my own plates in my home state?

I would ask the carrier that will be paying for the plates, what you will be allowed to do with your truck, when your are not pulling/hauling for them.

The contract states that it's pretty much my call what I do, but I will look into it more. I also states I have a certain timeframe to return all items if I should end the contract, which would allow me to get home etc. The company has three trucks, owner and two company drivers. I would be the only owner op. That is just to say that I speak directly to the owner.

The main advantage of getting them yourselves is portability. The main advantage of getting them through your carrier is usually they will pay upfront and deduct it on a weekly basis.

Cost will or should be about the same either way

The issue with getting them through the company is if you decide to leave
Those plates belong to them and most I’ve heard of won’t refund you the difference until they find a new guy who signs on and needs plates and if others quit before you then those plates would have to be reissued first

Get your own plate, if you or the carrier decides to part ways that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about.

Yeah if cost is the same pretty much, then i'd just assume get my own. The point of being an owner operator to me, is to have the most control of my own sht.

I would recommend you getting your get your own plates. Company plates can run around $50 per week. I paid just under $1900 this year to renew my tags.. The big advantage of having your own plates, is if you were to leave them voluntarily, or if it was their decision you will have your own plates to drive home.
