I think your calculations are wrong Probably should figure 100 x $0.25= $25, 25 x $3.25 = $81.25 for total of $131.25 per load. I typically pay $10/ton for commodities hauled into the farm. Chopping silage cost to me $10/ton all in. That's chopper, trucks and big 8 wheel packing tractor. Corn silage chopping has a very short season, but you may have other crops that need chopping like wheat or rye. I'd recommend getting paid by the hour if hauling out of the field. You might also want to check into hauling commodities into these large farms. A belted or walking floor trailer would be needed.
Your right RL. A guy needs to sit down with the man and get the deal clear in your mind and some numbers on paper that you agree on. The analysis you give nets out at .65 a running mile. Costs will eat that up and nothing will be left. By the hour you know where you stand and is the only way on short hauls. Then you are paid when the chain breaks down somewhere for 10 or 15 minutes. The equipment issue, as you mentioned, needs to be addressed. If you are pulling their trailer that's fine, or rent one and factor it in to your overhead. Just do you damndest to not work for nothing and wear your equipment out or park it. IMHO
