You’re missing my point. The system is broken. Why would I pay 180-200k for a truck to make $50/hr when I can go drive a tri-axle dump druck for $30/hr plus LOA of $150 a day?? And not have a dime invested. If you can’t see just in those simple numbers there’s no worth to a highway tractor anymore, then you can’t see the forest through the trees. Specialized equipment? Money in it all day long.

If owner operators where you’re at are making $50 an hour then I’d say there’s too many trucks and it’s a race to the bottom.

600 miles x 1.65/mi = $990
600 ~ 5.5mpg = 109g
109g x $3/g = $327
990 - 327 = $663
$663 ~ 13 hours drive time = $51/hour
$1.65/mile is everything paid. Plates, insurance, tolls etc.
Only thing off my settlement is fuel.
Make any sense to keep going? Not really. Do the math. I can go work for $29/hour with $150 loa/day. After 14 days I can take home close to $5500. Explain to me again how good rates vs elogs vs hos is. -
It’s up to you if your situation makes sense or not. The only thing I don’t see as reasonable is saying the government should mandate hourly pay because in your situation you could do better as an employee. We’ve all been under this version of the hours of service since 05 or so when they changed, I can’t recall for sure. So if you bought your truck any time after that all that has changed is how the hours are recorded.
Truck capacity has more to do with rates than the hours of service. Find a niche, get into something specialized. Make better money for less work.gentleroger Thanks this. -

If the only thing you care about is the income, then why hold a CDL at all? Of course, there is something to be said for taking a job that you actually like and are good at. Should be common sense that there are much higher paying jobs out there, but then you don't have the freedom provided by driving a semi all over the country.
This might be a stretch, but it sorta reminds me of fast food workers complaining about not making enough money and demanding $15 an hour. Most common response I recall seeing from people was "If you don't like the low wage then just find a higher paying job".Last edited: Mar 10, 2020
