    ya i just took my cdl exam in november. you have to double clutch. and for those of you who dont know single clutch is........... drive......clutch it to neutral......then throw it into gear without the clutch. i do it sometimes. but im beginning to float the gears now. u can fake double clutch in the exam but dont worry so much. i thought i wouldnt get it. but it just comes to you

    I have driven allot of manual transmission 4 wheelers how hard is it to adjust to double clutching a big rig if you are proficient in a 4 wheeler?

    never heard of "single clutching".

    took my road test (100 yrs ago,or so), and drove it like I do now.

    no clutch, except when needed. ie, stop ,start, take out of gear , ect

    shows I knew how to drive.

    back in the old days, that is.

    I taught myself on the Penske yard, before I took road test.

    we only had 6 wheelers.

    It's a timing thing... as others have stated, you really will not use the clutch after your test, but better to know it than.not.

    With a four wheeler the pattern is clutch in, shift release clutch... both directions, up and down.
    With a truck, or non synchro gears the pattern is clutch in, shift to neutral, release clutch, clutch in, shift to gear, release clutch... that is for the upshift, coming down you add a rev in between releasing the clutch and clutching again.

    So pattern for a four wheeler is clutch gear, for a truck it is clutch neutral clutch gear going up and clutch neutral rev clutch gear going down.

    And you really do not have time to think about each step... just have to do them.

    Floating is much easier and saves the clutch.;
