I see the views here. Good to know that sitting higher and lower works for some of us, depending on our height and the kind of truck we're in.

I'm in a Volvo 670. It would be nice if the gearshift was about 4"-6" taller. I ride with the seat so that I can easily push the clutch all the way and so that my feet can be flat on the floor. It's a middle of the road height for me.

I like having the seat high enough to absorb shock. I also unlock my seat so it can rock forward and backward slightly in bumps. This is a big knee saver. I don't really sit high or low, though.

I guess I was confused, because Peterbilt guy was about my height, but he had to have had his seat all the way down with that shifter. I'm talking so low that his eyes were barely able to look out the windows and he had to have been looking through the steering wheel to see out the windshield. That would drive me crazy... I like to be high enough that I can see those crazy four wheelers sneaking in front of me.

I know what you mean. In a Mack RD, it was always trying to find a balance between leaving yourself high enough your legs weren't positioned in an awkward manner, while still leaving yourself low enough that your head didn't get bounced off the roof every ten seconds.

Well just from your message I can tell you mis-understood my post.... I am not telling you what you can or can't do.. It was a figure of speech saying you can't tell someone they can't see safely... You can do and think whatever you want doesn't make it right.... So your going to go around and say guys who drive with the seat low in traffic don't have a brain because they drive this way... Yeah that's not single minded thinking right there.... To me that sounds like a care of the "if I can't do it that way... then neither can any trucker out there"....

Sorry if your mis-read... I wasn't telling you what to do...Maybe I should have said.. "you can't be seriously thinking that it's unsafe for every driver to sit like that"... Cause unless you are that person you don't know what THEY are personally seeing... Like I said I can see perfectly infront of me and I am well aware of my surroundings...

I don't care if I have been driving 3,8,10,25 years.. The amounts of years driving doesn't have anything to do with how you sit in the truck.. It doesn't take you 15 years to figure out how to sit in a truck lol... Nor does how many trucks you have own lol.. This hasn't nothing to do with each individual driver drives the truck they are in... For all I know when I get into the new Coronado truck I might drive that with the seat at a higher position.. Why?? because the cab is bigger inside and the steering has extended and tilt steering... The dash is different... Like I said seat height has lots of variables and each one of these variables effect the way an individual sits in the truck.. The only person who knows if they can see a safe distance is the driver doing it.. If the driver is unsafe about it and stays that way to look "cool" is a moron and shouldn't be driving... Now in my case I know I can see safely.. I have a good driving record.. This is comfortable for me...

Are you going to tell me I should have my air ride seat up off the ground and be uncomfortable because that is the way that every truck should drive a truck.. Cause you think if they don't they don't have a brain??? Sorry that comment is just stupid..

Everyone has there own way of sitting... Low ride, half way or all the way up.. It's personal preference and as long as your comfortable
it (both comfort and safety) I don't see how sitting low in traffics makes you not have a brain... I am sorry if not everyone sit likes you..

Case in point.. I use to drive a Volvo for a company I use to work for... I had air in the seat and it was midway up... I had tilt and telescopic steering.... Lots of room around the dash area and I could sit in a nice comfortable spot.... I sat the way I felt safe and comfortable.... Now I sit on the ground on the day cab cause I feel so cramped and this is the only way I feel safe and have lots of room around me...

One of the reasons I also don't air up my seat in the day-cab is .... If the seat is to high and I hit a up I will hit my head on the short ceiling.... If I dont have enough air in the seat and it a bump then the seat slams on the ground and you feel that a lot more then what you have if the seat was already on the floor solid without it bouncing up and then slam down on the stops.....

Anyhow I am not trying to argue so lets not make this a pissing match... Everyone has there preference and it doesn't make you stupid because of the way you sit... The only thing that makes you stupid is if you think that everyone that sits on the ground is doing it in a unsafe matter because they are not sitting with the air-ride seat up...

I don't care how anyone sits.... As long as they are in a position that allows them to drive in a safe manner and know what is going on around them....

    Also...

Day-cabs and Sleepers are too different animals..... My seat only goes back so far... If a guy has a sleeper the seat will slide backwards more then in the day-cab... So for the guys riding low with the seat in the sleeper.. Yes I highly doubt they have a good viewing distance of the front of the truck cause they are so far from the dash now who knows maybe some of them can... I can't speak for them I can only speak for myself..... I am not far from my dash or the steering wheel.. I can't go back that far...

I wasn't trying to get into it with you. You just assumed I was. Maybe you realize what I said make sense and just won't admit it. You can respond when your not tired and in the mood lol

    Anyhow. Measurements

16ft with seat down. 15" seat height
15.5 seat up. 17" seat height

If are car got in front of me the only way for it to disappear would be if it was touching my from bumper. Or maybe a smart car could disappear in that area but they are not that stupid.

Hope this gives ya some insight.

I also sit on the floor in a 08 w9 I sit on the floor for leverage I put my heal on the floor and pivot my ankle so not to do a wheely from seat bounce better control the long shifter thing is to be cool . If you don't try to be cool your not gonna be. I think white letters on big trucks is silly when others think its cool . Who am I to judge as long as kiddys keep pulling the invisible horn rope I'll blow some air from the roof. Now that's cool. Dig what I'm throwing at ya man?

Which is why anytime Im walking in front of a truck I walk atleast 5-10 feet in front of the hood if possible. All it takes is for the drivers foot to slip off the clutch, or for him to not see me, and you could easily be killed.

I had a Pete dock beside me last year that had one of them tall shifters with a skull up top. It brought a smile to my face as he shifted the long swing. You don't see that everyday. I bet that wears your arm out in traffic.

I like resting my hand on the shifter too much to have one of them. I also like my max visibility. Like others said, it's not just what you can see. It's important for pedestrians to make eye contact with you when crossing your path. That's hard to do when you are halfway in the sleeper peeping through the crack between the steering wheel and the dash. That's not the only comfortable position. If drivers were meant to sit like that, they would of made the side windows longer.
