I've never had a beam. They are a lot of weight and money stuck up in the air, but they sure do work well!

Yeah they do. Non skip conditions people with little radios could work me for 20 + miles like if I were right outside their door.

I've always wanted a beam, but I wanted the best like a Moonraker and I never did see one that was too durable, plus they cost a lot. I haven't ruled out a simple 4 element beam, if I ever get my tower up, but it ain't likely. I'll probably just stick with a good ground plane antenna.

Every 11 years or so, the sun starts sending out extra energy. This energy gets soaked up by a few layers of our atmosphere, called the ionosphere. When it is getting enough energy, these layers start acting like mirrors for radio waves.

Currently, these layers (the "E" and "F" layers), are getting enough energy to send CB frequencies back to the ground. This is what CBers call "skip"; the signal "skips" off of the ionosphere.

    Stroker,

MsJamie gave you the scientific definition of "skip" and is dead on. It also means that you can talk to other people using "skip" sometimes 150-200 miles away or unlimited miles. I'm in AR. right on the OK. border. Some of the posts above I have listed the places that I have talked to depending on the conditions that MsJamie described above.

A good channel to judge how well the conditions are is 6 or 28. Motormouthmaul is in CA. but most of the time he sounds like he is 5 miles away. The best part is that the guy/gal on the other end can be across the country buy sound like you are across the street.
The best and most unusual for me was hearing two guys talk about headed back to deer camp and what they were gonna cook for dinner. I called to them just to see if we could talk. They both answered and we talked for a good 10 minutes before they faded out. I was 50 miles south of LR, AR running down the highway. They were both on their 4 wheelers with barefoot radios somewhere in the hills of NC. Amazing.

And when skip is really good, and the channel is not too over-populated, you can talk with as little as 4 watts, no kidding.
