Personally, I have never dropped or advanced a gear out of a time until I know certain things.
Well, maybe I have... but I don't really understand what that means.
    Non sequitur.

(Between you and me, I secretly know that you meant to say 'drop/advance a gear one at a time.)
But, that is not what you wrote, so it is fair game.
    And yes... I'm bored.

I do it all the time. If I'm in 10th and getting ready to exit, I have my own little procedure that I start about 1/2 mile away. I do the "loop". I'll go from 10th to 8th to 6th. So basically, I just use the bottom numbers of the gear box. I believe in your case though, 25mph would mean to downshift to 7th, not 6th. On my truck 6th gear is 20 mph. It would be interesting to see what different speeds and rpm people on here use to downshift.

I guess i dont really understand what that means... Going from 8th gear to 6th gear is what, 15 mph difference? why not just grab 7th while ur in there... Skipping gears as a new driver will get u in trouble more than its worth i think. Because u will likely lose your place of where ur at in the gear pattern, when ur also trying to gauge a turn and watch traffic and every other thing that u need to calculate while driving...
I think u might end up stuck in neutral and not know where to go next because now youre flustered, your road speed is declining which means the gear u are needing is lower and lower than you originally intended to go to, and every gear you try just grinds and finally you will find low range and rev match into 5th but then the rpms are to low so now you need 4th then u cut ur turn to tight because u were trying to find a gear and now your tandems are on the sidewalk and going straight towards a fire hydrant, seems alot of times stuff like that happens when ur brand new. It sounds dumb but weve all been in similar situations.

Just work on downshift properly and it will help you out in the long run.. #### happens really fast when u are learning to drive. To answer ur question yes you can brake down to a proper speed and rev match 2 gears lower or how ever many u want it doesnt matter..but i guess its not a technique most experienced drivers would use really, im not even sure if i do it or not, theres no point to it in my opinion

    I love that.

Much of it sounded like twirling down a whirlpool of despair into oblivion.
    Alice into Wonderland.
All from trying to skip a gear.
    Brilliant.

Back when I still had a manual I would fail guys if they couldn't "bump and run". Being able to skip gears makes it a lot easier to recover when you do miss. Skipping down allows a driver to slow/stop in a shorter space, very useful for those downward sloping clover leaf ramps and congested interchanges where you need to keep your speed in order to merge into the exit lane, but then have to slow for the ramp. Think 894 to 94 on the east side of the Twin Cities.

And it may seem counter intuitive (it did to me when I started driving), but going gear by gear makes it MORE likely to be in an incorrect gear to make a turn, unless you start slowing WAY too soon, which encourages idiots to cut in front of you, which makes perpetuates the circle of stupidity. The guys who insisted on going gear by gear rarely had the appropriate gear until they were entering the intersection and they were so focused on making the shifts the weren't focusing on the turn. On roads like US 30 through Indiana, guys trying to go gear by gear end up needing to stand on the brakes to get stopped in time, resulting in a "Hard Brake" critical event. Guys that skipped a gear or two didn't have that problem.

As always, a driver needs to make the appropriate decision for the situation they're in. Most times I would go 10-9-7-5 or 10-8-7-5 as the speed ranges lined up better

Now that you put it that way, i guess i do use the gear skip from time to time. I just never think about it. I guess there is never a hard and fast rule for shifting or really driving as a whole. All situation based. I do shift down each gear on off ramps and slowing down in general.. but i guess if u count skipping gears as not splitting the high and low range on a 13 and just moving a full gear on the gear pattern then i guess im skipper... I think i spend more time focusing on wheres the best place to put my truck to avoid stupid the best i can, and the right hand and feet do what they do to get me there
