Google Voice is free. You can call any phone in the USA and Canada. I used to use Skype. I rarely used the webcam feature, just the phone. Why pay for it when you can get it for free? Just google Google Voice, (what in the hell have we come to when we use a funny word like that as a verb and a noun in the same sentence, anyway?) It's easy to set up. All you need is a Gmail account, which is also free.

    but skype is free too.

the only time I every paid for skype was when I was overseas and I bought a local US phone number so family could call me if they didn't have skype. I use it to talk to my GF, who is deployed to Afghanistan with the USAF, and it's all free.

that and I haven't seen a google voice app for the iphone yet, but on my computer, skype works better than google voice. less lag and better quality and skype can deal with lower bandwidths better

Skype is free if you want to call another computer that's running Skype. Google Voice lets you call any telephone for free. If you want to call telephones, Skype charges $2.95 a month, which isn't that horrible either. What Skype does excel at, is computer to computer video calls. That is free. Google Voice does NOT do that. It just turns your laptop into a phone capable of making free calls. Google voice is only available in the USA too, that's another drawback.

Google voice on the Android market, I've played around with it, but I can't get it to make calls over wifi. It's more of a call forwarding service as far as I can tell, where you can link multiple phones to one phone number.

If you want to make a free call to a telephone, and you are sitting at your computer, Google Voice is there. Just throwing the option out there. I'm a Skype subscriber as well.

I guess that's what I don't understand, if you want to call a phone, why wouldn't you just use your cell phone? I've used skype to call phones in the US without a subscription. I think it's $.02 per minute or something like that. No subscription needed but I don't use it much; Only when overseas. I have unlimited minutes on my phone and can use airtime or skype for video straight from the phone with unlimited data as well.

I just bought a phone on the Virgin Mobile service. $25 a month for 300 minutes. Data and text is free. That's pretty frickin cheap. 300 minutes is more than enough for me to conduct business with during the day. But when I'm on my own time, and want to call home, or the boss wants us to call in for some lengthy conference call (which is his new toy,) I plan to use a VIOP solution, so I don't use the minutes. I also have Virgin's wireless internet card which runs me $40 a month. I bought a router for it off of Ebay, so my truck is a rolling hotspot. I've had that set up for some time. The phone I got over the weekend, I haven't had time to set it up for Skype yet. Like I said, I tried Google Voice for Android, but it doesn't let you make calls like it does on the PC, it's more of a phone number forwarding application.

All together I'm paying $70 for everything. I was paying $140 MINIMUM for the phone and internet card at AT&T.

I just bought a Droid X and download yahoo messenger and skype. Skype is not working ....says in US works only over wi-fi. Yahoo messenger works great. I put my droid into the window holder and I was talking to my wife while I was driving for at least an hour. They were watching the road I was driving on and on my screen was my wife on cam.
I just woud like if skype would work on my Droid. On laptop Skype is working perfect. Computer to computer is free and with sound and voice is just breeze.

who's your cell provider? on verizon on the iphone it works great over 3G. AT&T doesn't allow video over 3G, only wifi, so it may not be the phone, it may be the provider
