As I suggested, 89 is a good scenic route. Contrasted with 491, it's "Come for the shorter mileage. Stay for the drunks lying on the road."

Sorry, New Mexico. The land is still there, but the enchantment has left the scene.

I literally hated both the cortez and the shiprock scales, so I always took the scenic route through the rez.

Are you paid by the mile? If so take the longer route.

    Upinsmoke Thanks this.

I don't think shiprock is open anymore. The few times I actually drove through. It looked abandoned like the eastbound tehachapi scale in California. All fenced off and weeds growing.

I have not been through there in years, but if it is closed, that is a good thing. They were not always open before, but a pain when they were. I know the VAughn scales were closed for years, every thing froze up. The dot talked them into rebuilding it, claiming they would make it worth it if they would, soooo they did. It only opened sporadically, but it was money making time when it did.

Shiprock has been closed for years.

The Tehachapi scale is not closed. It is more a seasonal thing. When the produce hauls get going, that scale will be open a lot.

I have to give them tehachapi guys credit for their ambition. They are the only ones I have even heard of that crawled all over and under a load of bees to inspect the truck. lol
