But if you do not have them , you do not have to supply anything. You can go into a casino and gamble your 10 hours off duty then get in the truck and drive, totally legal, maybe not to smart, but legal.
Where drivers get into trouble is claiming for instance sleeper in a crew cab, instead of off duty. You also do not have to answer any of there questions. Drivers need to learn to shut up, stop volunteering information to DOT, they are not necessarily your friends, they are there to take your money, put you out of service or take you to jail. It the job. If you the driver pays for the hotel that does not necessarily make the hotel bill supporting documents and your wise to not carry it.
I keep most all my paperwork in a USPS / Next Day Air Prepaid envelope, with and address label preprinted by the company, all I have to do is seal it, and a cop does not have the athority to open it without a warrant. Everything except actual shipping docs like BOL's.

But if there were NO hotel receipt, no rule would have been violated and obviously you would not be required to show said non-existent receipt.

Most truck drivers are too stupid to understand your obviously advanced understanding of truck driving and the law.

This is probably an unrealistic expectation of most truck drivers. Truck drivers aren't known for being prudent.

Drivers who are required to prepare hours of service RODS (Records of Duty Status) must install and use electronic logging devices (ELD/Electronic Logbook). The main criteria for maintaining RODS is as follows:

    • The driver is involved in interstate commerce.
    • The vehicle weighs 10,001 pounds or more (gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR), or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight whichever is greater)

This issue has been demagogued to death in these boards, and I'm done with it. I am just acknowledging your quote!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I've been driving an 18 wheeler since 1986 and I've never had an issue. I've heard all the horror stories about the DOT. Just say yes sir... no sir... and don't make stuff. Make them want to screw with the next guy who has a bad attitude.
