If you are away from home long periods, and you like to stay connected, and you already have a laptop, and you don't download/stream alot of movies etc, then get a verizon smartphone and tether it to your laptop with PDANET for internet access.

No need to pay for a phone and also a hotspot dongle...

Not a driver, yet, but I tether my flip phone to my laptop. My phone is 3G capable so quick enough for most things. Feel it is the best of both worlds.

ATT has a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket for $20. I got one and re-upped and am paying less w/ a 5 gig plan than I was w/ my Iphone on a 2gig. This phone is BAD@#S. True 4g and features out the yang. And you can use it as a hotspot for your laptop.

Projump most drivers have a laptop. Also most of the chain T/S's have wifi and they charge for it. As far as the smaller chain and Mom/Pop T/S's its hit or miss. A few them don't charge, but this is rare. All the cell phone have data plans of some sort and most are limited to 5 gigs. You can go over quickly if you download a lot videos, large files, etc, and likely pay thru the nose for it. What I do is when I'm on a 34 reset is stay at a Motel/Hotel with wifi for a night and download any large files, videos, and such.

Thanks for all the info. I went to Walmart and got a new Samsung rugby for $28. Might upgrade to smart phone later but not for now.

My old phone got what is refered to as the "white screen of death". I could still call out and recieve calls but no access to anything else(saved numbers, texting etc) Unfortunately they (walmart) were unable to transfer my contact numbers to the new phone and I had about 120 phone numbers in there. :biggrin_25513:

If you get a google phone, all your info is stored in "the cloud" (servers online). Each time you get a new phone, enter your password and bam! All your contacts, previously downloaded games and apps are all available again!

Other phones and service providers have the same thing, but for some it is a pay service.
