I bought the a new gear, and keyway because I heard story’s of warping the gear in removal. The keyway had the number and arrow on top. According to the timing code sheet arrow points forward.
I’ve had good luck on other 855’s running the injectors IBC. Up til this one, I used to set the 4inlbs by feel. And they ran with no smoke. With this engine, I held the injector up while using a torque wrench. When that didn’t work, I used the OBC method from Cummins. It had a chart on it that told what to torque the injectors to varied by cpl. There was a difference of 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn between both settings.
I did test the STC system, regulated air at 40 psi changed the top end noise and the engine idle. I did not change the smoke, and it continued to miss on whichever cylinders it decided that day.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Yes, rotated engine 90deg past TDC#1 to where 2nd set of marks on cam gear lined up accessory drive marks.Oxbow Thanks this.

A question I came across when timing it. My motors manual said after setting the piston indicator to 0, rotate the engine forward around “90 deg”. The online n-14 manual said to “90 deg”. At @70t 80 deg is where this cam had its max stroke, but when I zeroed there I was going to need .100 gasket shims to get within spec. Turning complete 90 I ended up with .058 of follower gaskets
Also what fuel pressure should I have at an idle? The pump guy said it should be @20? But I’m at a pulsating 5psi.
I’ve also been question on whether I’m carrying enough oil pressure for the STC system. At operating temp it, it’s @30 -40.
No ones been able to tell me if I’m in range on any of it.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Your timing should only be checked in one position, that is when the piston is at .2032” before top dead center. The reading you are getting off of the cam is the amount of push tube travel left to complete injection.
Your oil pressure is fine, the fact you heard the top end sound change means it is and that was done at idle.
If you want to check your OBC method, I would use a mag base dial indicator on each injector pushtube, OBC is done when injector is at peak travel, put the dial indicator on whatever injector you are setting next and bar the engine forward until the push tube stops coming up, make you OBC setting here and then set valves on same cylinder.
Always set injectors first.
What in-lbs setting did you use for OBC?
Can you get me your engine serial number so I can get the CPL?Oxbow Thanks this. -
What is the timing spec you set the cam followers at? Does the engine run ok & clean on the road & only smoke & misfire at idle?

If you PM me an Email address I can have procedures and trouble shoot info sent to you Monday.
It you set the overhead like an N14 I thank you are all wacked up. If you torqued the injectors and backed them off they are to loose and a loose setting will make them smoke like a train. I know this from messing around with them trying to get a little extra. Best set to specs. My manual shows using the tool SmokingCAT mentioned. The OBC STC method came out later. I did not know there are different torque settings on different CPL's. Maybe he can help us out. Was the STC oil pressure to be relieved before adjustment also?Oxbow Thanks this. -
My question on the cam was where to zero the injector travel dial indicator? At 90deg tdc as the book said or at the maximum injector travel (at around 70or 80 deg? For whatever reason this cam was different. It has like a .01” hump at the very end of injector travel.
My OBC procedure came from a page a local mechanic copied off for me, the chart on it showed 1210 cpl required a 90inlbs rolling torque, when bottomed out.
Serial number 11519040 cpl 1210
ThanksOxbow Thanks this. -
Chart I got from my parts dealer showed my injection code GR needed set a .138 for normal timing (.136 fast and .14 slow). Needed a step keyway ( I don’t remember that number ) but the arrow pointed forward. And my follower assembly numbers matched. What ever it said.
I don’t have a load to really know how it pulls. But the one time I had someone following my during a test drive he said,”No. Highway speed was fine. I could smell your exhaust the whole time, but no white miss raw fuel smoke.” at an idle this engine just starts missing a fogging white fuel smoke. The miss moves, and has been on every cylinder at least once. -
