Ratchets are slower but safer. Snap binders are a lot faster. I carried mostly snap binders with a few ratchets. Ratchet binders alo take up more room.

I have only ratchet's. I haul open flat with tarp. if I need to check securement & re tighten, ratcheting the binder from the ground is easier than having to UNDO the snap binder & reposition the hook.
SHC Thanks this. -
I've decided to go to all ratchet binders as I find them to be a lot quicker to secure and easier to tighten on the road.

My suggestion is to keep say 4 snap binders around for the day you're wishing you had not taken them off the trailer. Saved my bacon a few times!Mommas_money_maker Thanks this.

There are many places/companys that do not allow the old style over under boomers and more Such as Shell as a prime example in the oil patch.. plus they are much safer lass likely to open suddenly and break your arm.. hows that for 2 reasons

Oh, I'm keeping all 6 snap binders on the truck, just adding 6 more ratchet binders. I feel that you can never have TOO MUCH securement equipment.
-
Only 12 total? You'd have fallen over if you would have looked at what I carry! But, then you would also know why I can only scale 43,000 pounds with a flatbed that weighs less than 9,000 pounds.

Currently I only have 15 binders and chains. Once I add the 6 new ratchets I will have 21 ratchets.
I also carry ALL 3/8 chains but looking to get some 5/16 soon for smaller, light stuff. Lugging these 3/8 all the time on a 5,000 load is a little overkill LOL -
Lowe's has 20' 5x16 grade 70 with two grab hooks for $29. They even come in a bag
dannythetrucker and skellr Thank this. -
Some guy got his face messed up bad using a 2' cheater bar to release a snap binder. Some people just aren't aware of the danger.
