I had a carrier bearing fail about a month or so ago. I could grab the drive shaft and shake it.
"No, that play is just from the company buying substandard parts".
Really? Then explain to me why it isn't doing it now.
Add to that, I've been listening to it squeal for a year, and now the noise is gone.
SingingWolf Thanks this. -
Not really if it drops straight down First instinct for everyone is to stop. That's good actually. When they spin the thing and beat the frame rails and airlines and electric wiring and possibly the air tanks...THEN, it gets expensive.speedyk, passingthru69, not4hire and 4 others Thank this.

When I had that carrier bearing fail I probably COULD have limped it back to the yard, but I was afraid of grenading something.speedyk, passingthru69 and TripleSix Thank this.

Driveshaft is probably the cheap part. Its everything the driveshaft destroys while its whipping around under there. Air tanks, air lines, wiring harnesses, ABS modulators etc.

I had one go on a lifted Chevy 4x4. It felt like 50 guys whacking the bed with sledgehammers.Dye Guardian, ShooterK2 and AModelCat Thank this.

Had carrier bearing go out twice on me. No warning vibes, noise nothing. First time was making a turn on the loop in El Paso. Sounded like I dropped the transmission. Was able to get parked to the side with a wide ld.. Cost me a drive shaft as when it went the shaft got twisted. One new carrier bearing and driveshaft..
The second time was going down the road and we smelled burning rubber. A trk. was passing us and we thought he had a flat.
My wife says no smell coming from under trk. Pulled over, yep the rubber bushing wore out.. Hello road service, I need a new carrier bearing -
Worst one I had was when the u joint let loose on me going down the road. My fault to boot. I have a slight vide in my ride. I thought it was a cupped out tire I had. Nope, seems the tow company that towed me prior installed the drive line out of time. I got towed in with a blown turbo. Any how it let loose on I 10 in Ca. 1 bent crossmember, ripped out air lines and 1 drive shaft. I tried to go after the tow company, but they just blew me off..
speedyk, Dye Guardian, Dave_in_AZ and 1 other person Thank this. -
I've never lost a driveline in anything. Although I did buy a used pickup when I was 18 and put nearly 3k kilometers on it with 1 u-joint that had no needles in 1 cap
. I just assumed the hop I got at 70km/h was just the cheap tires the used car lot stuck on it. Found it when the transmission came out for repair.
cnsper and passingthru69 Thank this. -
What street were you on? Seattle has some steep streets and it's definitely a challenge for even cars with a clutch to get going if you are stopped at a red light.
