i have driven in the snow with other vehicles and installed snow chains on all 4’s but for a tractor I have a few questions.

Do you ever in any condition put chains on the steer’s?

What conditions require chains on all 8 drives?

And do any conditions require chains on all 8 trailer tires?

Never on the steers, doubles on the drives ( I dont normally put chains on the aux drive, but some may require it) typically one single on each side of the trailer axles.

Fresh Snow over ice on a mountain pass may require all drives chained and locked in.

I put it on a steer tire once for unbelievable freezing rain to get off the road into safe shelter.

I use doubles on my main drive and single on my interlock axle, rather have too much traction as too little. I general I try to stay south of such issues, but this doing mail runs to Seattle had to toss iron a couple of times. USPS loads do not park and wait if the roads are open

In the old days we (My Dad and I) did not chain trailers, we would back off the brakes on one side on one axle, that one wheel because it was rolling would act like a kind of rudder, actually worked bery well, but DOT takes a real dim view of the practice.

I’ve only ever chained up one drive axle, usually the rear. You can climb a mountain with a set of triples on one drive axle. Never used to, but since my trailer doesn’t have ABS so I’ve been throwing a set of singles on one a trailer axle.

A little bit of magic tricks deep in the bag. I thought I was the only one taught that little tidbit.

    Never on the steers Op.

Sounds like a lot more work than putting a chain on.
