Its OK Slant we are never going to be as smart and good as all the guys that are doing their thing. They employ the same principles and thinking but yet we are the ones who are taking advantage of the little guy. And yes Skinny I am pretty proud of myself for securing a new car deal. Ive worked long and hard as an o/o to get where Im at. Now at least I have some security in my business for the first time in a long time Im actually able to enjoy the money Ive earned. Funny thing is, so do the o/o's I have leased on to me. I treat them with respect and load and haul the same loads in the same weather conditions they do. I still drive. I don't sit in the office. It just always seems no matter how much or little percentage you take someone always thinks its unfair and too much

I'm not a car hauler but I am an owner operator. I am interested in the dynamic between the O/O and the business / owner that one would lease their truck and themselves to. It seems that there should be an attitude of partnership between the two. However, in real life it does seem to be quite different. Not that everyone is like that but most contracts are in favor of the business to a major degree. Everyone is working to make money. Where is the mutual respect ? At the end of the day does the business owner not try to rule over the owner operator? No offense to anyone I am trying to learn how this "relationship" should be viewed by both parties.

Not once did I say you're taking too much. Hell I don't even know what you're taking and it's none of my business. But dont come on here calling us who question your "Authority" so called owner operators. At the end of the day you gotta do what's right for your situation just like we have to do what's right for ours.
You might not be on the other side of the desk like slant 6 but I think you've already forgotten what it's like on ours. We aren't privy to the emails and the direction of upcoming traffic so we gotta take every load on a per load basis. Which means every one HAS to be profitable. Cause remember allied? You'll never know when it could be your last

    Just an FYI skinny.
Been on both sides of the desk. First licensed for Class 1 in 1974. 15 years before CDL. And I still hold the license. Still have my withdrawal card from the IBT also. Been there and done it in all kinds of weather.

Good for you. I too was on the other side of the desk. Was a terminal manager for Hansen's for 5 years. Do we both get cookies now?

Forgotton? That's funny Im on both sides of the fence everyday. This thread was started because an o/o at the company we worked at previously, calls himself an "owner/operator" but yet wants the company to loan him money in case he has to get towed or has a breakdown. He also didn't wanna take runs that would put him too far from the terminal in case his truck broke down. Isnt that his responsibility? He was told when he leased on that he would be required to service ALL the dealers in the service area. That includes Reno, Redding and Euereka to name a few. If your equipment is not up to par whos fault and responsibility is that? The company who your leased to ? They don't own your truck. You do! That's why you are paid 80-85% of the gross revenue tyipicaly. So why would the company be responsible for his tow bills or breakdown if they occurred? This particular guy refused to go to Reno, in the summer because he was afraid of a breakdown. This was at a time when we had nine Reno loads backed up and every truck was being asked to take one. No snow, roads clear and sun shinning. I say that man should not call himself an owner/operator because he didn't handle his business. Long story short, his truck finally blew up and he couldn't afford to fix it. Not because the rate was cheap but because he wasn't a good business man. He took home appox. $8500 a pay period after paying percentage and fuel. Again weak o/o

No actually I felt like I was betraying the guys that I had working for me. I brought most of them in. I hand picked the perfect team. Our numbers were outstanding or damage rate was near nil. But then I started seeing how the company got greedy. Taking a bigger percentage and saying that the MFG adjusted rates. Paying damages that weren't caused by my guys just to keep dealers happy AND charging the drivers back for it.
So I went back to the side I belonged on.
