It seems they are coming and we need to get compliant.

I have the big truck and guess it will get one. My pickup (company truck) sometimes falls under dot rules sometimes not depending on if I am crossing state lines or if I have a big trailer.

I often drive both in the same day.

Overall driving is a small part of my job. I work more doing other things than I do driving but I drive at least a little bit almost daily.

They was I understand it I need an elog device for the big truck and my pickup. How do they sync with each other?

Many times I am exempt due to the radius thing and being local but not always.

To further clarify here is an example of a day for me.

Load a piece of heavy equipment and my dually (over 10k - logs required when out of state) on the flatbed and drive to another state. Park the semi, unload the equipment and my pickup and work and then drive pickup to the motel. Next day drive my pickup to jobsite, might finish and load everything up and head somewhere else.

If you have the same system in each truck (i.e. Qualcomm, Peoplenet, or whatever) you simply log out of the device when you leave one truck then log into the device on the other truck. Each driver will have a unique user name and password that can be used on any truck that is equipped with the device.

there are systems that use your cell phone or tablet. If using the same program in both would be best. Not sure which will give you the best options in your unique situation.

Just use the big road app 4 your cell phone. You will have a login and can pick which truck you want 2 apply set status to. It's free and easy and editable

Yes, you will need elogs in both trucks, if you currently are required to complete a paper log more than 8 days in any 30 day period. If you can work you assignments so that you are not required to complete a paper log more than 8 days a month you will be exempt.

As for communicating between the two, that is simple as any compliant eld must be capable of doing so. Your company would subscribe to an elog service and order two devices. You would log in and out of each device as needed and your hours of service records follow you from device to device within your company.

Be wary of cell phone apps, unless they have a device that connects directly to the truck's ecm they will not be compliant after Dec. 18th, and most do not currently have that capability. You can use a phone based app, and it can connect wireless, but it has to have an interface connected to the engine to be compliant as an eld.

Is the Big Road app DOT compliant? Being it does not hook to the truck ECM makes me think that would be a non compliant device?
I hope it is because I will be using it if it will be legal.

We are a small outfit. I am the owner. We have the semi, and two pickups which will need devices. Maybe only one of the pickups will need it. I don't thing the big name systems would be best for us. There has to be a ton of owner ops impacted by this and surely someone is offering a small scale simple system?

My logs won't be nearly as accurate on ELD as they have been on paper. I don't mind drawing lines to get caught up if I've been working outside of the truck...but I refuse to sit there trying to enter back data into a silly computer that was put there because some bureaucrat thinks it'll more accurately record my hours. Bottom line, I won't be touching that stupid box other than to go off duty when I park it. Everything else will be up to the device to change which line it's drawing on. They wanted automatic recorders, so let them record automatically. If they can't accurately record my time, that isn't my problem...should have thought of that before you required me to use it.
