So confused on elogs

    How do you keep up with hours when you are not even near the truck?

    For example a couple weeks ago I drove the semi to another state and logged the trip there on paper. I worked there locally and the truck didn't move for five days then I logged the trip home. Per the FMCSA I had to keep a record of my hours worked each day (but no actual log) to make sure I didn't go over my 70. With the elog do I have to enter in my on duty not driving hours somehow or does the paper still work?

    I hear a lot of people griping about these elogs by honestly I think if you were in the truck driving all day everyday it would not be that bad. My situation though seems tricky.

    In this case you would edit your information prior to the trip home, or since you are the owner you could do it from a laptop in the hotel just before you leave. A compliant eld will allow editing of all information except total miles driven and the time on the driving line. So, you would park when you got there, go to the appropriate duty status (on-duty or off-duty) and forget about the eld until it was time to move the truck again.

    Probably the best solution for you is the VDO RoadLog, it is the simplest device on the market today, does not have an annual subscription it is a one time only purchase, where most other devices are leased units with install costs, monthly subscriptions, data plans, etc. The RoadLog uses a USB thumb drive to record the driver data, you insert that into the device mounted in each truck and it moves your log book data with you, then you insert it into your computer at the office and it updates the office records for audit and record keeping purposes. It is not cheap, about $700 per device and you will need one device for each truck that requires a log book, but that is it no monthly fees and you can install it yourself so no install fee either.

    Now, read between the lines here because as a safety consultant I can't tell you how to cheat wink wink, but my only concern is since it uses no computer connection there is nothing to stop a driver from using multiple keys (usb drives) to make up extra profiles and run outlaw.

    There are other devices on the market that are simple, I think there is another that just came out with no monthly fee, but the VDO RoadLog is the one I am most familiar with. I am not a retailer for them, have been trying to get set up but have not had any luck. I am getting set up as a retailer for another really sweet eld product, but I am not yet, nor can I advertise on here since I like being a part of this community and don't want to get banned.

    Can the driver edit on the VDO system?
    We have 1 truck,I need to be able to edit my own logs! Also no tracking of my speed!

    Speed tracking is mandatory, unsure of how much you can edit on the VDO RoadLog, mandate allows discretion to edit everything except the driving line, but most elds will highlight what has been edited making it stand out for law enforcement scrutiny. The speed and location tracking are a part of all compliant elds, it is the only way the system can verify the driving mileage and time is correct.

    As a 1 truck owner you will have access as both the driver and the safety manager, so you should be able to edit everything except drive time as no one is permitted to change that entry.
