If you could have changed lanes "safely" I would have done so especially since you have been down it before and never had a issue...
Because it really would have been better to get around at a speed you have went down it before then chance over heating the brakes to a point of failure. .... see what I am saying ..
So first time overheating brakes

warped drums. cracked brakes. leaking axle seals.
that's what happened to me the only time I smoked the brakes. but I was told Jakes weren't allowed. needless to say I break the law now on that roadLepton1 Thanks this. -

just be glad CHP wasn't around. i'm sure they would have had a field day with you. i wouldn't be surprised if that southbound scale called you in to CHP. if they were opened.

First you should not stop w/ hot brakes! Keep rolling so the air cools them. Glazed brakes, heat checked drums. Ahhh the smell of smoking brakes. It something you never forget. I wonder why they don't have a brake heat sensor gauge.
Lepton1, CondoCruiser and tangerineGT Thank this. -

dude, don't sweat smokin your brakes. It happens occasionally to every driver....veteran or rookie. Just try to do better next time bro.

Best do some learning from other drivers; the safety man won't teach you near as much as we can teach you. And we won't write you up just to cover our butt like he will have to do.CrappieJunkie and Lepton1 Thank this. -

Yeah don't call the safety guy. You already know what you did wrong and it'll cause you nothing but grief.
i know all the big companies tell newbies not to shift gears going down mountains, but that's what I would have done if I couldn't pass the guy. If you're confident in your shifting skills, it's no big deal to downshift while going down hill. You just get on the brakes real hard one time, until the rpms drop to about 800-900, grab that next lower gear, and you won't have to touch the brakes again until you get to your exit ramp. That is preferable to riding the brakes all the way down and causing them to overheat. Just make sure you don't miss that gear though.
