I always was taught that good audio starts with the mic and only the mic.

 

My sra198 works the best on all my radios I'm sticking with it

 

I liked the first part of the s--ts and giggles better than all of them... took 2 aspirin after the 2nd part of the s-- ts giggles...lol

 

If the radio is incapable of accurately reproducing the waveform injected by the function generator it doesn't matter what kind of microphone you plug into it.
Tuning the microphone input sensitivity of the radio itself to perfectly match the output level of the microphone is a whole separate issue. Virtually all technicians seem to Overlook that.

 

Sorry guys, if your radio works well, and you mic sucks, than your signal sucks.

Any quality in the audio chain starts with the first item in the chain.

 

That's very true but the first item on your chain is completely useless if the radio is unable to reproduce the sounds coming from the microphone.

 

You've never did this stuff as a living have you?

You start with the first item and work down the chain, you don't try to tune the audio chain with bad audio, how can you tell what is working?

 

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out getting a 20000 Hertz wide signal through a Cobra 29 limited to a 3000 Hertz band pass doesn't exactly work.
If somebody spent $3,000 on a Neumann u-87 hoping it was going to work on their Cobra 29 they would be greatly disappointed at what it sounded like after losing all of the Fidelity in the audio chain of the radio itself.
It kind of seems a little bit more logical to push boundaries and set limits within the radio itself and make sure Fidelity is possible before wasting $3,000 on that Neumann u-87. In case you didn't notice there's lots of guys in this thread going out and spending money on microphones only to figure out the radio is unable to reproduce the original sound coming out of the microphone due to adjustments that have been made or adjustments that should have been made that were not made to their radios.

 

So we should all get a heil mic then if it's the best of the best...
