the trucks i'm finding so far that will fit my application are not coming with an APU. any idea how much weight one of those set-ups will add to the weight of the truck? i'm going to need to keep my weight down to 18,500 including total fuel capacity. it's not hard to find a truck that fits the bill (height, wheelbase, weight) until i add in the fuel. i'd like to have something with a decent sleeper on it so it's easier on the back end for resale as well as driver comfort. but most of the trucks with the "normal" sized sleepers seem to also have the larger fuel tanks which send me right over the limit. so an APU may not really fit the bill for what i'm looking at doing with the truck currently. The research continues.

    thank you!

I am exactly in the same boat and strongly thinking of opening my trucking company (with my own authority). I am from another industry altogether and recently started thinking about opening a carrier (starting small). Driving myself is not an option. So, I would have to hire driver(s). I realize that in doing so my profit margin goes down, but at the same time it allows me to grow my business. I have been religiously lurking on this forum and getting myself educated as much as I can. There is some great information out here. However, this forum seems to be more targeted towards company drivers and o/o's. I saw your post and couldn't resist replying :biggrin_25519:. Perhaps, we can leverage our findings and help each other out?

Check with someone about work comp if you are going to hire someone.

Found out today, for a year startup in MN, work comp rate is $13-15 per $100 of salary for a driver 200 miles or more from home.

And there is probably a minimum salary to . So as a start up o/o you can't say you only paid your self x. The insurance co doesn't care you pay on there minimum.

Mn is $29k minimum and if you file income tax for more at the end of the year, it's cross audited with revenue and you are penalized AND have to pay the additional premium if you under paid. For employer or employee.

Is that INCLUDING per diem, or just salary?

Problem (though not a problem, really) is that you can't LOW BALL your WC/OA, and expect them to pay out what you're "used to making", in the event an on-the-job accident occurs that takes you out of the drivers seat for awhile...

Occ/acc is available for the o/o and is like $1800 per year or $150 per month

    And thats for salary only.

I asked him why anyone would want to start a business in Minnesota. He said, "I don't know"

    Hello All!

I was wondering if anyone has started a fleet under another company like dare I say their name "CR England" or any other company that you can lease from? I have heard that there is a few guys that were able to do this and make it work, but can this really be pulled off?

Any suggestions and comments would be helpful.

    Thank you in advance!

Must be in a pool? Many states have to start that way, once you get it direct the experience modification lowers the rate every year you have no claims. You can also get into a profit sharing plan where you can get up to 60% of the premium returned.
