Don’t let the knob contact your palm. Pull it out with your pointer and middle finger only. The knob will be fine.

I dont let it hit the palm, i do use pointer and middle, thumb typically on the trailer button for extra leverage and support helps some, but its the release speed that essentially goes from all the joints being in tension to essentially compression for a second.

Your method is fine, better than anything else, but ive yet to find anything that makes my hand happy about the process.

I would unscrew it and take it to a good wood worker that could fashion something up of your choosing and then you can just swap it over for your shift.

Something big that helps u use your whole hand and arm so that the workload is spread around

You ever not fully have ahold of one and have it crack your finger? Very unpleasant.

Any chrome shop has these in stock. These are made of a thick metal that are easy to handle and absorb any shock.
