Might be easier to have the starter done with the trans out. Little more room.

ORIGINAL starter? at 10 years old ? you sure got a lot of life out of it, if it has not been rebuilt. when you replace, go with the new type gear driven starter. it is half the weight, a lot smaller & turns over a lot quicker.

Everything that this man said. 10 years..... wow....

I had a Remanufactured Delco Remy Starter installed that lasted 9 years until the solenoid started acting up.
I installed another Reman, had the other one rebuilt by a local shop with new brushes and a new solenoid and I kept it as a spare.
It's always a good idea to have a spare of everything, as you never know when you might need it, and when it's time to replace it, you won't have to go looking for one. -
I have a spare starter that I had rebuilt a while back for a spare, but when my started started to drag, luckily it gave me a warning, I did not put my spare on. I just bought the new type for about $375.00 I love the new type.

What new type? I went to dealer and purchased reman for $300.
I have Delco Remy 42MT. -
The "New Type" is a Gear Reduction Starter, smaller and lighter and supposedly more torque.

39mt is new type

I've been fighting this same issue on my truck for 5yrs and have never figured it out. Sometimes I turn the key and it will click once and nothing more. It might take 5-6 tries before the starter will actually spin. I've cleaned all connections multiple times, replaced started solenoid on firewall and replaced the starter and it still does it. I finally gave up and just live with it. Only thing I haven't tried is replacing the actual key switch.
