Never start out under power. Let the clutch out with no power to get the truck rolling then apply power. Your drive line will thank you after awhile.

I agree with the last two posters. Start in lower gear like 2nd. Trucks nowadays are fuel injected and if your In the right gear to take off it won't buck, the fuel injection is all you need, you shouldn't even have to push down on the accelerator unless your on a incline. Your instructor is obviously impatient and doesn't want to give you the chance to work up through the gears and down. I would go above his head and ask someone, cause if your at gross your gonna have to start from 1st sometime, why not get what your paying for and get some extra practice.

I got it now. I am actually able to start in 3rd and 4th pretty smoothly. I understand not to do this when I start driving for money but for now its fine. problem I was having was I was easing off the clutch in one fluid motion slowly, now I start getting it to the first point of it engaging and sort of holding it there for a second until the truck starts to actually get the roll going and then easing the rest of the way off. hasn't bucked on me yet besides maybe a little.

they lease their truck from Penske which covers all repairs so they don't give a #### either way.

Way to go see what a little seat time gets you.
I am with the others on starting in 2nd gear. Does the truck have that beep beep alarm when you back up? It should and if so that is how you can tell if not in 2nd gear.

No it doesn't it's a peice of #### Volvo. As of yesterday the speedometer stopped working so downshifting is going to be a ##### today without it. The transmission is also never been replaced with countless students learning on it since 2011 so even perfect shifting is a little choppy.

I believe we are talking about the same gear. A 10 speed 3rd is the same as a 13 or 18 2nd, position-wise. Look at the shift pattern on the knob or the dash

I'm going to be the voice of dissent here, but I start out in 4th on a regular basis. If I'm loaded up really heavy I'll go down a gear or two. Empty, no, it's 4th gear.

One thing to note, too, is that all the trucks I've driven, being local here in California, are geared for California, which is to say a little lower. Still I doubt that my 4th is equivalent to most 2nd in most trucks, maybe closer to third, but not second.

I would be willing to bet your clutch is getting hammered whether it jumps and shudders or not
