I use to flippy flashy all the time when I first started driving, however, I rarely do it now.
Reason: blown headlights and marker lights; especially in the winter time due to it being cold and the lights being hot. With the whole CSA stuff I'm not taking the risk when I have other means to communicate with drivers; so get a freaking radio and turn the d@mn thing on.
When I see a truck coming up past me I use my CB and say "Come on by me there big truck" and if they respond it's usually "Thank you." And once it is safe for them to get back over I say "Come on over there _____The name of their company___." I make sure to call them by the name of their company so they know for sure that I mean them and it is safe.
If I have greeted the passing driver and they do not respond to me, then I assume they are a driver that does not turn on the CB unless they are b!t@#ing about a traffic back up or wanting to know what is going on with an accident. In that case I turn on my driving lights when they are starting their pass, once they are safely past me, I turn off my head lights, leaving my driving lights on, for two seconds then turn my headlights back on. I still have two white lights shinning ahead, though they are not as substantial as my head lights. I then use my CB again to say "__name of truck company__ you are clear to get over."
I do not flash brights at night because when I am driving at night it is most likely the end of a very long day and I am tired. Bright lights hurt my eyes and give me a headache, so I prefer to be ignored rather than flashed.
I also talk on CB to drivers I am passing: "Hey there __Name of company__, I am coming by you." After I am past I say, "__ Name of company__, I am coming back over. Once I am all done I say "Thank you __Name of company__"
I don't care if they flash a thanks or not.

Be like NYRODIE up there; Most of us can tell when we've added enough space to safely come back over.
Of course, looking at your mirrors every second while passing will increase your chances of getting an eyefull of bright lights. Work around it. Believe it or not, people are still gonna use their brights to signal you whether it be by not knowing better, still doing it regardless or because they have DRL's which prevent them from turning off the headlights the proper way.
Oh, and I have used the "UP YOURS" expression when its as clear as day that the driver that just passed me is sore at me for not flashing them over..... Its called a few flashes of the highbeams once they've completed their pass to say "UP YOURS, drive your own ###### truck!! At this particular point in time, you didnt need me to flash you over!"

Been a long time since I've been flashed !!!!!
Kind of miss it......... -
Most will come over before I can flash them. They don't wait long enough so that they can give more room. In fact, some will come over after barely clearing my hood. Years ago, most would not even come over until they were flashed. It made it safer than the way most do it today. Wait until you can see both headlights clearly without having to move forward in your seat and you should have enough room to come over.Skip1965 Thanks this. -
