Again guys i appreciate the advice. But now youve put me in a bind between the 2 companies lol. But i think since ive already got stuff going with werner i might as well follow through my main goal he still is to get some decent exp. Id really just like to learn the ropes of the trade with an okay company then move to something different like flatbed. Flatbed was my original choice for a company type but i think it would be less on me at once to learn how to work in this company. Maybe later on i can get in with tmc because they were my original choice. They seem to be a strong company plus i love them petes! but thanks again guys keep the info comin!

I would agree with others to choose Melton, choosing werner over Melton is not a wise choice imo
I have met some Melton drivers and they LOVE the company, told me they are treated like a person not a number like the large companies.

You're going to throw away around a year of your life because you "already started" with Werner..? It's pretty rare to find a Werner driver or former driver that isn't/wasn't counting down the days to the end of his first year so he could start looking for other work. Melton was a place that people would get experience for so they could get into.

Well bein as i have absolutly no otr exp in a truck other then what driving i did during my training for my cdl i wanted to go with werner because of the fact that they are a good starter company for exp. I want to learn as much as i can with someone else teaching me instead of having to figure it out little by little. To me thats enough to keep me with werner for now. Plus melton just started there student training program just earlier this year from what ive heard. But thanks guys

would of still went with melton....

Most drivers dont even learn a lot during the training program, when you go solo and get on the road you learn more....

I wouldnt worry about how long a company had a training program for, choose the company for the long haul. If I was offered a pre hire to Melton I wouldnt of gone to the company I went to....

When I started driving a big truck, lo those many years ago, I started off hauling a flat bed. I survived the experience but there are easier ways.

Surprisingly enough to many people, it takes some time to transition to being a "professional" truck driver from being a four-wheeler. I'm not referring to become a 'steering-wheel holder' but, rather, a person who can not only drive the truck (any monkey can drive a truck) but who has developed the situational awareness that is necessary to avoid all of the potential 'jackpots' you can encounter on any given day.

It is far easier to learn what you need to know to drive a truck safely, and well, without the added burden of learning how to become a competent flatbedder at the same time. Flatbedding, like truck driving, is not as simple as it looks.

As for 'throwing away a year of your life" or looking for a company for the long haul, you may want to keep in mind that over 80% of all new CDL holders are out of trucking by the end of their first year. Virtually all of us old-timers have worked for a number of companies; it often takes awhile to find a good fit.

Personally, I think Melton is a good company but I attended their orientation some years ago and it was quickly obvious that it wouldn't work for me. Nice people and all but a bit too 'good ole boy' for a 'nurthener' like myself.

    LBCsbc2013 Thanks this.

Thats basically what I mean by their training program being too short. I just wanna make sure that i get the amount of time learning the industry before i take on something like flatbedding. I wanted to do flatbed from the start but i figured since im new to the industry i should learn it the easy way before i make it any more difficult on myself. Ive heard good things about melton and so far i dont think theyd be a bad choice in the future.
