I think that's a good, level-headed approach to entering the business. You'd probably be surprised at the number of people who are pre-hired by a training company and don't even make it through orientation. Even more never see the other side of in-truck training.
Truck driving is not an easy occupation and you're going to encounter a great many admin types who are operating without the benefit of a single, functioning, brain cell. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to transition from a normal 9 to 5 person into a 24-hour driver. Make it as easy on yourself as you can.
