Why wouldn't I stay positive? So far, things have been great!
That $5/mile load came with strings attached, as all good paying loads seem to do. First string was that upon arriving at the shipper, I was informed that this was to be a floor load of bagged wood shavings. Oh, and one of the two baggers was down, so the load would take four hours instead of two. <sigh> Second string: Receiver was not expecting the delivery until Saturday. I was told they would accept it the same day. Receiver (horse stable co-op owner) was none too happy to see a 53' trailer roll in packed with bags of wood shavings, knowing that all of his help was planning for a Saturday of unloading. Well, he seemed a bit less irate after I offered to help with the unloading (his wife was still fuming, however). We got started, and throughout the 3 hour process people started coming out of the woodwork to help. So, I got some exercise after being cooped up in the truck for the last couple of weeks. And they now have a whole Saturday to do things other than unload a trailer. And I got a $60 tip for helping out. All is good.
Oh, this place was way back in the sticks. 12% grades on single lane roads with no lines and lots of tree limbs. And traffic - mostly cars with the occasional 3 axle dump. Fun times. Yes, I replaced both upper clearance lights on the front of the trailer. And broke my CB antenna.
I'll post my earnings for this week when it's over - and it should be over $1K again. -
Not to say that it can't be done because there are always exceptions to any rule but what's the purpose in posting on a forum about how much money you're making and how you're doing better than the other guy. Just concentrate on driving and make the money you can.
Treefork Thanks this. -
Maybe sharing his experiences will help out other rookies?
Jarhed1964 and windsmith Thank this. -
I'd say its somewhat unusual for a rookie with no experience outside of one of the large training companies to get hired on like this. Insurance usually dictates a minimum experience level at smaller carriers. But it's interesting.

I just don't get the concept. There's been people making good money and there's been people cmakng bad money since trucks have existed. It just comes across as trying to brag about something that you haven't done yet. If you make $50k your first year then awesome. If someone else doesn't then it gives them something to shoot for in year two or three or twenty.

there are a few truck stops in MA, exit 6 off of I90 in chicopee/springfield at I290, exit 24 off of I91 in whately, there is a pilet on I84 right by sturbridge, I95 near the NH line I believe there is a TA and you have your choice of "rest areas" along the way -
another one off 495 at the 14....pay to park but not bad at only $8 with a decent sized lot but you have to walk across the road to get to the actual store
that one is sturbridge is usually a PITA to get into or out of any time of the day unless you just absolutely have to park there......never seen such a bunch of fuel island loungers and no-parking idiots as i have every time i've ever been in there -
Before I signed up to get my CDL, I spent years (yes, years) lurking and reading all of the negativity. Pumpkindriver was the first site that I started with, and it snowballed from there. I bought into that recurring negative theme for a long time, and had resigned myself to a year or two of indentured servitude so that I could eventually advance in the industry. An opportunity presented itself that allowed me to bypass the unpleasant time I was expecting at one of the 'majors', and that's why I'm so stoked. Ironically, the individual that posted the opportunity was himself berated for posting it with very little in the way of specific details. All it took was the initiative to send a PM and follow up with a phone call to learn 'the rest of the story', which turned out to be more than I ever expected to be available to me. I've been handed the tools to be successful. -
