Not owning or using any firearms I'm not educated, but I do realize that different states have very different rules on guns. If a person is going to transport a gun into or thru other states I would think it would behoove them to know the law of the land where they are headed. Isn't there an easy resource?
And all states being obligated to honor anything is a tricky proposal...
Something to think about!

I think what some are arguing is the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the US Constitution that is in article IV section 1.
Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.
I have heard some good debates about this in regard to this issue. I own a firearm now. I actually used to wear it when I was able to walk. Now, it mostly is stored in my gun safe.TexasKGB Thanks this. -

The NRA and others have been lobbying for Nationwide Reciprocity but it never gets passed, even when the GOP is in charge of everything. Once politicians solve something, that is one less topic they can use to raise money.Accidental Trucker Thanks this. -
I for one don't want the thread to suffer a final move to politics from those who cannot "Not" bring up messy progun or anti gun arguments that are familiar to everyone. However Bases are the last place you want a situation where someone goes crazy and starts being a bad guy active shooter. My family has a relative who protected nuclear assets during the cold war and his son is in the same situation also protecting nuclear assets with the USAF. IF a bad guy penetrated his base trying to get at the nuclear bombers or missiles etc The son's team is to go hunt the bad guy and take him or her out fast. Or arrest everyone else. That is the theory anyhow which has worked well.
I remember the Navy Yard in DC from a few years back, that was a very bad day with a active shooter. They finally took him out but it's a bad day. He had tried to plan that one well. In the end they still took him out.
See where i am going? The constant bad guys thinking they will shoot up a base, a school, a synagogue or whatever and they still get taken out. And we go through the usual hysteria and trouble for a while and things calm down again until the next bad guy commits a shooting.
Its still horrible.
Without talking political, I leave everyone with this thought. Criminals have guns, they dont care about the laws and laugh at anyone including the Police who tries to stop them. The terrorist bad guys think and plot really well to try and hurt us where it hurts but in the end they lose their lives and thats that. Pointing to London UK as a example There is no legal guns anywhere except a percentage of Police allowed to carry them. What does the people do? Practice with effective knives. and continue to take each other out. Until the UK police gun carriers arrive to end it.
People will do what they will do with their lives. If they wish to do evil? Then it falls to the rest of us who love our children and everything good to erase the evil quickly like a surgeon cutting out cancer in a timely manner. -
Carrying a firearm means you volunteer to risk certain problems to avoid certain other problems. It's not just having a preference to be on trial or be mugged (better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6).
Carrying sometime means getting fired for a very minor incident that would not have even been an incident if you didn't carry.
You never know when the next customer you go to will do a thorough search of your truck, even if you have been there a dozen times before. The next terrorist incident may cause customers to search trucks.
You never know when you will have a medical emergency and be taken to a hospital in a distant city. Then have your company pack up your gear (find your gun), fire you, and you lose your health insurance.
You never know when your truck will be burglarized and your gun stolen. Are you going to report the missing firearm or wait to see if you are later arrested for your gun being used in a robbery?
You never know when your truck will breakdown and you are forced fly commercial back home. Unless you have TSA approved storage box and lock, NOT the TSA approved luggage locks, you will either commit a felony taking it back on the plane or it will be stolen by the "ramp rats".
Unless you have a working and accurate crystal ball you cannot predict if having the gun in the truck will help you or hurt you, no matter how boldly you state your preference for an outcome. It's not JUST a decision about whether you prefer to be armed or unarmed if you are mugged.
How it used to be back in 1973 will not protect you in 2019. If your buddy once was able to leave his gun with Base Security and retrieve it later, that has nothing to do with getting on base in 2019. They don't let you out of jail because you forgot to change your calendar or because your truck stop lawyer gave you bad advice.clausland, Bean Jr. and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
With regards to firearms, this is the one time truck drivers ARE treated like any other citizen. You must comply, or risk punishment, with the laws in any state, city, county you travel through. I only know of 2 ways to be legal everywhere. 1) be a retired or active cop with a badge. 2) don't have a gun. For everyone else everywhere else you have to know the laws where you are at or risk the consequences. -
Declare your truck a sanctuary that doesnt have to abide by state law. If cities can declare themselves sanctuaries in violation of federal law, then so should truckers be able to with their sleeper cabs.
