I would thank this post multiple times if I could. Great attitude. Always secure the #### out of the load and drive as if there is no securement. That's my rule of thumb... and I still have both thumbs.

That's why I love living in Manitoba and running high-boys.

I would be nervous as well. Its healthy to be uncomfortable and keeps eyes in the back of your head for the unknown. I haven't hauled coils however looking into flatbed work.

I come from the manufacturing side and foundry work so I've dealt with a fair share of light/heavy coils. Seen many bands snap with ease and come unraveled. Then the magic happens on figuring out how to get the long tail that's dragging in the furnace without damaging anything. pita is an understatement.

There was a coworker who transferred departments then after some time he got smacked with the tail of a coil after breaking the bands so it could be ran on one of the lines. He was hospitalized for weeks and had a couple month recovery. Heaven help someone or the family though from the sheer weight and trajectory these contain if it comes off the trailer.

I would personally always feel better if 100% of the weight was tied down and some form of bracing. Seen a video of a accident on youtube where driver rear ends another trailer. Couldn't see the coil fly off very well in the video but it shot out of the passenger side. Commenter pointed it out.

    Love that old/bold flattbedder phrase.

I hauled a 10 foot 6 inch tall 16 cylinder engine on a drop deck. I think my weight that day was around 70,000 pounds gross. I was in a light truck and a short trailer. I used 6 chains on it. Couldn't go over the top. Didn't have straps. That sucker was top heavy. I only had to go 50 miles with it but it sure did make that trailer sway. It was actually this exact engine. They wanted to keep it nice and pretty so no scratching it.

Now if I could get THAT engine in my truck... but maybe steer axle weight might suffer a tad...

That, I'd have told em that there was no way that could go on the deck safely. For the sake of safety, I'd have had to make the bolt it to the truck frame. Up front. Make sure to secure it to the transmission as well, as well as securing the electrical, fuel, water lines, etc....

You know, for the sake of safety.

You're right, we might have to redesign the truck with a rear engine design.

My buddy hauls those for cummins all the time. Never felt that it rode that bad wen I loaded his trailer for him. Pretty easy to secure since there usually on frames like in the picture.

Probably not that series of engine yet but the smaller ones yes. That one would be the QSK95.
