You may wish to ask yourself, besides a paycheck, what do want to get out of trucking? This job is often more of a lifestyle than just a job. I'm OTR, by choice, because I like the travel and lack of routine. I'm just fine being cooped up in my truck for long periods of time and spending most of my time by myself. I get a kick out of waking up and having to think a bit before I even remember what State I'm in. That isn't for everyone.
I have a buddy who I went to trucking school with and he's only 23. He has been having a really dilemma with the lack of a social life as a trucker. For his age, that's a pretty normal kind of thing. I'm 60 and that's not much of a problem for me.
Anyway, there are lots of 'flavors' to this job and one size doesn't fit all. I would go insane if I consistently had the same route, even if it meant I'd get home much more often. Others prefer that because it will get them home on a regular basis and don't mind, or even prefers, the same route repeatedly.
So, think what you want to get out of it. Ask questions here about those kinds of things, lots of folks doing lots of different kinds of trucking here that will gladly help with the pros and cons of the different types of trucking. And, this isn't an occupation where alot is set in concrete. If you think you want to go OTR, try it out. If it doesn't fit, get a regional or dedicated route. If you find you like being a truck driver, you'll be able to find the niche that makes you happiest.

Absolutely! I agree. It’s definitely a different scene coming from being behind a bar. Dealing with hundreds of people a night to now on the road by yourself. I think personally it would fit just fine. I like my space and my peace. It gives me clarity. I’m not really interested in having a family per se and social life, ha what’s that? Get me a dog and hit the road. Let me be and leave me alone lol!

Be sure that the trucking company you choose allows you to have a dog. Good luck to you.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

The absolute sheer driving force of our national economy - without truck drivers, our entire national economy would come to an absolute standstill - if not outright be dead.

Over the mountains, through the woods, into the valleys, coast to coast, from sea to shining sea - truck drivers can and do go anywhere and everywhere, every day, every night, all year round.
