How's it going, guys. This question is aiming towards o/o and company drivers living in South Florida. Naples, Miami, Cutler Bay, Key West, you name it. In general, anyone that lives in the State of Florida is more than welcome to tap in. But yeah, when coming off home time how do you guys find freight coming out of that area? I live in Tampa and 95% of the time I throw $200 in the fuel tank and deadhead right back to either Savannah or Atlanta. I've been considering moving further South to maybe Naples or Marco Island, but just the thought of having to deadhead 500 plus miles to get out is really making me reconsider. YUCK!!

Oranges. Along the east coast. Fort Lauradale comes to mind. It will be a while loading.
If yer flatbed, plant city with gypsum sheets.727Guy Thanks this. -
What about for a dry van? I'm assuming they just throw any ol' anything in the box an give a rate of $1.28???? I've seen rates that low.

Florida is a taker. If NASA has some trinket or something that needs to go to another western state they probably have that covered.
Every time I have been to Florida with anything Flat, Reefer and van etc it's just a long drive back out empty. UNLESS it is a really good load say chain and cable in jacksonville in reels going to Houston or up to williamsport etc. If you made it that far north you might as well see Georgia.
1.28 is awfully low. That's mid 90's rate close to break even in my time.727Guy Thanks this. -
I carried beer 300 miles from Jacksonville to Florence SC last week for $375 and you know it wasn't a light load. It was painful. The rates down there now are absolutely awful. This was after jockeying 50 or so calls with brokers all day. I don't usually get stuck but I almost did there.
Florida is not improving.
OP, I think the answer to your question is contract freight or move somewhere else.727Guy Thanks this. -
I would have just deadheaded instead of taking that load...fortycalglock, whoopNride, pavrom and 1 other person Thank this.

GOOD LORD!!!!!!!! What is that, like $1.30 a mile??

So what do you typically see coming out of South Florida? Look at the companies that are HQ'd down there. Florida Beauty Express, Blue Line transport, ProLogistix, they run reefer and dry van. I doubt every driver they have that goes South of Orlando just turns around and deadheads right back out.

I know but for a couple of things. 1. Beer, at least in the SE, always pays crap. 2. It was available and fit with my next run perfectly so it paid for my fuel. 3. It fit good timewise.
It was actually my first experimentation with Florida. I've never been there in my truck. Also, I got $1800 on 800 miles going in.
I don't know. I don't want to think about it. It bought my fuel as stated above, so good enough.727Guy Thanks this.
