Heading to Homestaed Florida sometime this week with a demo trailer for a hurricane cleanup gig my company got in on. Just curious what I’m getting myself into. I know the post is vague, but I’ve never been that far south in my life. Wondering about traffic, DOT, etc.

A buddy of mine went down to Miami against everyone's advice and he came home still hasn't got paid. You should do a back round check on anyone that you're considering doing that type of work for. There are 20 times more scammers than there are actual contractors.

As far as traffic it's horrible at rush hour and really never goes away. There aren't many truckstops, a Pilot at Miami I think. You should get a sign to go in you windshield so the DOT shouldn't bother you too much if at all.

There were several emails sent to me looking for crews right after the hurricane and they were paying 6 - 8 dollars per yard. I thought that was way to cheep. How are they paying you? Per day. Per load. Per yard. I would investigate the company as stated before. Are they expecting you to load your own truck? Are you bringing you own crew?

And I have to say most of the stuff piled up along the highways has already been picked up. I really do not see the need to bring in out of towners at this time. I would be very careful of who I was working for.

Also watch the areas that you are working and staying in as there are places that I would not leave my truck outside of a locked, lighted lot with a guard on it overnight.

The way I understand it, it’s under a Landstar contract. Paid per load, and haven’t talked to anyone with our company that hasn’t gotten paid. We’ve had 3-4 drivers down there for a couple months now. I’m just going where they tell me, and if all else fails, I’ll head back home and hook a tanker !
