I can hear my cb in the truck but the built in speaker on my old cobra 29 is hard to understand a lot of times. It just sounds like there is no bass and its all treble. Not to mention the people who have their modulation set really high or have an echo microphone.... Why do people do that anyway. What good is a cb if no one can understand you?

Anyway, would an external speaker sound better than the built in one? I dont talk on it much but I do have it on all the time. I'm just finding it hard to understand 75% of what people are saying due to high modulation or screaming into the mic. I can turn it down but that just makes it softer, still can't understand. Shippers and receivers are fine, its other truckers that I have a hard time with.

Go get yourself a nice shiny chrome ranger speaker... about the best that you will find in any truck stop! At a noticeable difference in sound quality. aim high

Internal speakers can and do fail; I replace several a year. Heat, moisture, or too high a volume can distort the shape of the paper cone. If some stations sound fine with your volume turned up, your speaker is probably fine. And no amount of high-dollar outboard accessories will fix the sound of badly-used transmitters. My advice would be to pick up a $12 extension speaker at any TS and see if it makes any difference. I've got a half-dozen; two on the service bench, others hooked to various 2-way gear in my van. It lets me bring all my radios' audio come from the same place up by my ear. If worse comes to worst, you'll be out $12 and have an easy way to troubleshoot possible receiver problems.

My belief is because for truckers, the Cb sometimes serves as both a tool and a toy. In the old days you didn't have all the trucker stuff like echo, roger beeps, etc. Must be for the kid in the long hauler looking to get his jollies off by being irritating.

Echo can sound nice.....if it's set right. But all too often people overdo it, or they think what comes out of their external speaker sounds good but they don't really hear what's going out on the air.

Yes it will. I like the Uniden Bearcat speakers you can find at truck stops for around $25. If you really want the best, there's a company in England called "Hear It" that makes speakers with noise cancelling circuitry inside. However they're very pricey....around $200. But they'll muffle out white noise and let you hear far off stations.

I like the para-dynamics external speaker it is big, about the same size of the chrome ranger but not as wide and has excellent sound qualities, IMHO. but they are getting harder to find, but they were around $20. haven't looked for 1 in several years, I have 2, 1 in the truck and 1 in the closet for backup.

I have bought Motorola communications speakers off of eBay for years, not one of them failed me and this is what I recommend.

There used to be a speaker on the market that was solely designed for cb radios and I still have a few. I don't remember who made them but they were in a solid plastic case (thick) and sounded very good with almost any radio I had.

I think president may have made the speaker you are talking about. As far as echo I am guilty of using it but don't set it off my talkback. I either ask another driver or let my boy talk on mine and tell him what to do from a another radio. Took a long time for me to understand just how loud my ol connex can be with the mic gain quarter of way up where it can barely be heard in the talk back speaker. To get soft and crisp like I want I really cant hear it through talk back speaker. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had that trouble.
