Hey all, I am looking for some advice. I am going to put some new trucks to haul Super B grain loads (130000 lb). The trucks I had running this previously have had issues with pulling power and they chew through fuel.
I am looking to target about 6 MPG and I was wondering if anyone with some experience with this type of work could give me some advice on what the key specs are I should look for?
Thanks very much, if you need any other info I will provide.

6mpg is a pipe dream, especially if you want power.
It takes fuel to make power, it takes fuel to pull more weight, 6mpg might be possible but doubt it.
Getting less than 6mpg, should be compensated by the fact that you should make a larger dollar per mile for hauling 130,000.
I would say 5 or even 4.5 is best you could hope for.
My 379 pete with a car hauler setup, gets 4.5mpg TOPS. That is at 75mph, where we cruise. -
I would say the oldman is about right. If you can get 5mpg pulling 130000 lbs I would be happy. With that kind of weight and the extra drag your gonna get with more tires on the road I would say 5~5.5 would be tops
Myself I wouldnt even buy new. I would look for low milage 2005 to 2007 trucks with non EGR engines 475~550hp, 18speed, and if you can find them with at least 3.55~3.70 rears. Take the engines and tweek on the ECM for inproved pulling power for the extra weight and go truckin. -
you can get a glider kit with a pre emission engine i'd say an 18 speed tranny that has an xtra low 1st gear and is a double overdrive and 44,000 lb rears with at least 3.90 -4.11 rear gears for any type of longevity the only time you will see 6mpg with that kinda weight is going down hill

Right now I am running a C15-475 15speed with a 3.7 rear. I have a colleague who hauls lumber and steel loaded 135 000LB running:
565 CUMMINS 18 SPEED 22.5 RUBBER 410 GEARS 135000 GROSS LOADED BOTH WAYS 6 mpg SUMMER TIME ONLY
Based on this you feel I am being fed a load? -
Are you loaded both ways, if only one way you should have no problem getting unless you are running alot of hills. Is is pretty flat up there? I would go with as much hp as the engine co. allows with an 18 spd and either 3.70's or 3.90's. I have 3.70 rears with an 18spd with a 525 n-14 with a power box and was getting around 6 mpg's with 100k-110k going west on 80 from nyc back to ohio and east grossing 75-80k, flat ground and no ny/nj. traffic I bet I could have done closer to 7

I am going to be loaded 75% of the time. There will be very few hills and the "hills" there are are fairly gradual.
