Meanwhile CSX can pull hazmat through their tunnel right in town and set it on fire, or NS can run up the corridor and go right past the Amtrak station underground on track 7. Amtrak dispatch can hold a southbound train at the mouth of the tunnel facing the station as well (and there have been fires in that tunnel). The old Mt Vernon interlocking runs out of there as well for freight going up the Light Rail to ####eysville, used to be a Flexi-flo right next door to Light Rail HQ with all kinds of tanker stuff being transferred.
So if the Harbor Tunnel was privately owned by Swift, they could likely run hazmat through it. It would be a sort-of test to see if they really believe they are a safe company or not, whether they would do it.

Oh the horror. The old Harbor Tunnel was built by Beth Steel shipyards right there in Baltimore Harbor in about 1952 or so. Two tubes, two lanes per Surrounded by steel frame. Floated out and sunk into place and then buried. A terrorist can so easily drown thousand. They are rebuilding it.
Mt Vernon, Bailey Wye (B&O roundhouse in middle) old Camden Station, Greenspring Station near the Lyric House and on and on and on. Canton Railroad etc. memories.
They do not run the South and East line on Oriole game days. Why? The trackage is 35 feet from 90,000 people plus oh... 400,000 more in that core of the city.
Amtrack is carved in stone inside of me. Certain rules with that 125 mph whispering death you will NEVER hear coming. YOU will NOT make it across or off the track. Use a hose to spray off the bones and chuck the rest into the grinder under the crematory.speedyk Thanks this. -
unless of course you are a fuel hauler running out of the terminals right next to the tunnel at one end, somehow they are exempted from the rules because it is too inconvenient! So they get to take 9000 gl of gasoline through the tunnels ... makes a lot of sense if "safety" is the main concern doesn't it?

The I10 tunnel in Mobile Al. is also a banned tunnel.

Right. I see that all the time.
Sounds like money talks.roshea Thanks this. -
I've been wondering for the longest whats the hazmat route for 77 s (and north) through west Virginia and where the tunnels are??? There's alot of mountains there...
-
I-77 is a mountain road. You should be good.
West Virginia however states the Wheeling I-70 Tunnel is a no no for hazmat

I don't know about my memory from some of the things so far back for me on I-77, there has been at one time or another detours around that Interstate in the north part due to problems. Its not common for me to have run it although I have used it. Most freight is east-west. Some like Coil is NW to SE across the smokies.
Just mind your horsies and oil-water temps in the hills this summer on 77.MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
Loveland Pass I-70 Haz-mat route in CO at night in January.....No thank you...Sir.
-
Same thing with the routes around the tunnels on the PA Turnpike.x1Heavy Thanks this.

And Baltimore, south 695 is good for hazmat key bridge. Not our tunnels.
Little Rock, 30 verboten in little rock core. 440 or 40 to 430 (Mind the horsies, you climb a stiff 600 foot mountain on the way off the river bridge) 630 is also verboten.
