I got used to it pretty fast, my first try was a cross country trip from NY to CA IN 2006. Pretty much 75 the whole way (79 out west). Worst was 4.3 going West through NE into WY. Best was 5.4.
In CA going back to MA. I set the cruise at 60 and got 6.6 the whole way back except NE, that was 6.
That savings made it real easy to stay at 60. -
Hopefully this Borg turbo I had put on gets me a little better. I figure 6mpg average over a week running almost only 2 lanes between 85k and 90k gross is about as good as it's going to get though.

So going west, which is generally going to point you into the wind, you got worse fuel mileage than heading back east, where the winds will generally be at your back? Go figure. Even a gently 10 mph breeze will make the 75 feel like 85, and the 60 coming back feel like 50.
How many extra days did it take coming back at 60 vs going out at 75? 2700 miles @ 75 is 36 hours, or roughly 3-1/2 days. 2700 miles @ 60 is 45 hours...which puts you into day 5. How much did you REALLY save? What could you have done with that day and a half? Round trip, you get back 3 days sooner.mrbucbuck and BoxCarKidd Thank this.
